We've been having unusual patterns of very cold (for us) and dry weather here in the Pacific NW lately.   On the cold (25 deg or lower) mornings, my '02 Dakota (4.7L V-8) leaks a little coolant -- starts dripping just a minute or two after I start it up.  On warmer mornings (above freezing) there is no leakage.  It appears to be coming from the radiator or vicinity, but there is a giant shroud under there so I can't tell for sure.  I plan to take the shroud off tonight to see if I can diagnose it better, but just wanted to ask on here to see if anyone has any ideas first.  I'm hoping it's something simple, like the radiator draincock.  Last summer I drained the radiator and I noticed the operation of that draincock was not very positive - had to fiddle with it quite a bit to first open it and then get it closed and tight.  Maybe the cold weather is exacerbating the problem?

 Well...it's a DODGE....whaddya expect? LOL

Just kiddin.....it's most likely a hose the is contracting when extremely cold. Try tightening the clamps on the hoses while it's warmed up. Same thing on the Corvettes...if they sit for a while, the hoses can contract, and leak a wee bit when first started, but once warmed a little, they're fine. Thumbs Up

I had that same thing happen on my Cadillac once.  I drove from San Diego to Flagstaff to seem my daughter over Christmas.  Came out of the hotel and had a puddle of green under the car.

Christmas eve is not a good time to have radiator issues.  Short story I found a radiator shop they pressurized the system before taking it out.  They could not find any leaks they guested that it was just because of the cold the metal shrinks and things leak.   They did not charge me anything either which I thought was nice.   I would not worry about it if it stopped after the car got a little warm.

Suggest turn it on warm it up a little turn it off and see what leaks.

Another short story on this issue the Navy support Antarctic operation every year they fly planes down.  If they leave them sit they all leak (a lot of) hydraulic fluid.  They tighten all of the fittings and put more fluid in them.  So it is not unlikely that this is just a supper cold issue.  By the way my Cadillac never leaked again while I was up in Flagstaff it was only that supper old night.

Thanks guys!  Joel, definitely hope you're right about it being a hose.  Based on the leak evidence it could pretty much only be the lower hose and the connection at the radiator was a little loose.   I took the big shroud off so now I can see up from underneath but it still wasn't obvious where it was leaking.  We'll see tomorrow - if it's cold again.

Gilbert, thanks for the info and stories.  I think you're right - even if it does drip a little when it's real cold as long as it stops when it warms up I should be OK.  It's never lost a measurable amount of coolant.

Joel, no offense taken at your Dodge joke.  I had a hard time buying a Dodge 10 years ago when I bought this rig, but it was one of only a few options for a small four door pickup.  The Colorado was brand new then and I didn't want to buy a new truck (plus it had a 5 cylinder Wacko)  The first few years of owning this rig had some ups and downs, but for the last 7 or 8 years it's been pretty good to me - gas mileage not excepting.
