A steam engine produces maximum torque (twisting power) at zero RPM; a gasoline engine doesn’t produce maximum torque till high on the RPM scale.  Partly because of this, and partly because of weight and resulting traction, here’s an 18 hp antique steam tractor outpulling a modern 850 hp diesel tractor.  Great theater.
