Interesting comment Ken....
I am just the opposite of you...

I wonder how many of US ...(we are a Fraternity of sorts) do most of our Vette related  work (ok its not work)  during the summer months or during the winter....

I drive the cars in the summer...only work on them IF something is bugging me or "just not right" with a car... In the winter I go thru each car "fixing" the little things that I have to "adjust" or preforming major
repairs that I have to get done...or want to get done...  there is a difference between the have too's and the want too's

Ok Guys.... do you do most of your work in the Summer or during the Winter... Just curious?

I do almost all of the work on my Vette in the summer, because I have never gotten around to putting a furnace in my garage, and I store her in my Dads garage in the winter, his isn't heated eitherWhen she is home,I do about 98 percent of the work myself, unless it involves machine or press work ,which I can't do,but know people that can.I like to work on cars, always have, thats why I bought a C3,I can still work on it,it aint got no computer JUNK on it

Do the projects in the winter & routine maintenance in the summer as the projects tend to take lots of time.

Last winter the vette was in storage, so I couldn't work on her.
This year she is in my garage, so I can do those things I didn't get too last summer.
If the cash holds out.

Denis, my next week's vacation are dedicated to actually do most of what you named.  Now, my digital camera was stolen a while ago and I have yet to settle with the insurance, so, If I can find one to borrow, I'll take tons of pics and throw some text around it.

I also belong to an Explorer SportTrac forum where they have a section the way you describe it.  They pretty much follow the same format and people rate them between 1 and 5 "wrench" where 1 is walk in the park and 5 is not so for the do-it yourselfer. This is the link if you want a good example.  Select "Members" and then "Projects" from the left menu.  You don't have to sign-in.

Mark, I know exactly what you are talking about.  One of the reason I bought my Vette is actually to learn basic mechanic.  Before I bought the car, the local oil change guys could have sell me blinker fluid, muffler bearings and the indispensable sky hook.  I will try anything on the car with proper documentation and tools.  If I break something, I come here first.  If it's over my head, I'll have AAA tow it to a local shop and fix my mistakes.  (Knock on wood, it hasn't happen yet.)

I do my work in the winter, as it's too hot in a non-climated garage in the FL summer; about 130+

I turn all of my own wrenches. The only thing that hasn't been done by me was the body work & paint job. I could do the body work but have never shot paint. I did install the ground effects and front / rear bumpers prior to the paint work though.
This winter she will be gettin new gas charged shocks and a shift kit. Along with a chrome B&M tranny pan cover when the kit goes in. I'm sure there will be other things as well but I buy goddies on impluse and don't have anything carefully planned out at this time.

I actually have no place to work on it other than my gravel driveway.  No garage.  So, it's going to be over 50 degrees, or it will wait.

Tux, you mentioned a chrome trans pan, if I read it right. I have always been told that the chroming causes a pan to retain more heat. Perhaps some other guys or gals can weigh in on the subject. Personally, I don't like to have to clean too much chrome. I go for the easy stuff to keep clean.

Chrome does hold more heat.  But it's a small amount.  In most cars it won't make enough difference to matter.  In extream conditions it can but the heat factor over the edge.   But there is that cleaning thing.

Finned alum. would be a better choise. It would not retain the heat and can look just as good. Just don't bottom-out or you could punch a hole in the trans. pan. My car is so low that this was a worry to me so I left the old metal one on and painted it Chev. Orange. Looks OK.

You are correct about chrome retaining more heat. A machinist friend of mine is always giving me grief for the same thing. (He is a aluminium kinda guy) I already have the pan from a previous small block. If I had a heat problem I would have a tendancy to worry about it. I have other chrome parts which haven't had an effect on this motor. I doubt that the change of pans will effect the tranny. Typically I don't drive the car much. 750 miles a year has been the max in the 2 years.
I have Chrome acentuators, valve covers, oil pan, breather top, breather tube, brake resivor cover, wire looms, etc...etc... I don't mind the cleaning. It usuasly only amounts to wiping it off.
I like the oil pan because at a quick glance I can see if the gasket had leaked. Nobody really ever sees it but when I had the motor on a stand it was more impressive. Again it was a hand me down from a former small block. I have a kept all of the original stuff for the "next guy" should someone someday want to change it back.
