I am looking for opinions on paint for my 72 convertible. We are starting the body repair on Monday morning so I dont have to make a decision right this week. I know I am going to hear the do what you want to do its yours, but, when I was at Carlisle I saw a 72 coupe that was painted Kandi Tangerine. I really really liked that color. The original color is supposed to be Ontario Orange. I bought the car to keep, however if I decide somewhere down the line to sell what is my true cost of not going with the original color. I dont plan to have it judged at any time. I am replacing a total interior with everything new down to most screws and replacing all chrome on the exterior. The Kandi Tangerine is more of a bright orange with a sparkling metalic. I know I should keep it original color but the Tangerine is a much nicer color. Should I worry about resale or paint what I think is nice. What a question! Looking forward to your thoughts. And please give me your true opinions.
Thanks
Rodney

Rodney, really depends on what you want and how original the car is. If it's far from being a nuts and bolts correct original, make it what you want.

I went with a complete color change myself....Thumbs Up

If it was me I would go with the Tangerine! It'll be great either way, enjoy.

I think you'll enjoy it more if you go with the Tangerine. Unless it's all numbers matching and all that then go with what you like. I will repaint mine hopefully this winter. It's supposed to be targa blue but I'll probably go with a different blue. I'm leaning toward the electron blue that they used for a few years.

Rod if you don't plan to sell it for a while do what you really want, put the color on that makes it crank heads. When I do the Red one I want a red that pops, I choose Viper Red.

Back in the 2009 C3VR calendar Member Howard Van Bruggen Screen name "hvb79" from Renton, Wa. had an Orange 1979 for the month of October I remember him writting that his brother and Dad helped him redo the car.

He painted it Lamborghini Orange and its is awesum. I also saw a Pearl Orange 1980 at Vettes at the beach this year and absolutely hated it, though it looked like puke.
I still owe you that scan of my blaster ans as soon as I find that "safe" place i put the darn book I'll send itConfused
Bottom Line it's your Vette and all your hard work.....make it's yours!..............unlike Barry (jaws79) who has to keep his the stock colorBig smile

Color is a personal choice that won't hurt the car (IMHO).  Done right it will catch the eye of the next owner.

I agree that unless it is a very correct high-dollar car, color won't be a factor in resale.  For everyone who is offended, there will be at least one more who loves it.  I recently saw one that was House of Color Tangelo Pearl.  It was spectacular!

I am a big fan of Ontario orange. I agree with a little bit of both arguments. If i knew I were going to sell the car in the next couple of years, I definitely would not go with a particularly radical color. I have seen the House Colors Tangelo, that Larry mentioned, and agree it is a spectacular color. But that is merely my opinion. Ten other people may hate it, and one of those ten may have been a potential buyer, if not for the color. I usually say do what makes you happy. But I would not follow my own advice if I knew I would be selling in the next year or so. I do believe that color matters when selling a car, especially a Vette.

Scott,
I agree with you  and the others that when selling a vette color and paint become a major issue. I like the Ontario Orange and with todays new paints I think with lots of clear coats it will look deep and nice, but that orange I saw in Carlisle was awesome. I appreciate everyones thoughts. I still dont know which way I am going yet. I have 2 - 3 weeks to decide. Going to bring some paint samples home tomorrow for the wife and daughter to look at.

Best of luck Rodney. To me, there is nothing more exciting, in the car hobby, than new paint. Man, when you start pulling off the paper and tape, and see that new color pop it's a great feeling. I know whatever you decide, you'll enjoy the outcome. Especially if your wife and daughter participate in the color choice.

Yes I agree with all here ..definitely a tough choice ! If you really liked that color you told me about at Carlisle I would go for it! One choice has to outweigh the other..one has to think what I would enjoy more-the color you chose or a little more money a few years from now? Can't wait to park next to it at Sonic again!

I just got my Vette back about 3 weeks ago from a complete strip and repaint.  The original color was '80 Classic White.  I repainted it 1958 Snowcrest White.  I think it looks great but that's just my opinion.  It really depends on why you are repainting it.  If you're doing it for resale value, then, go with an original color.  But if you're doing it to please yourself, go with your gut.  Good luck.

Its really good to hear how everyone thinks. I still havent made up my mind yet but on Monday the painter is going to shoot an old panel with the Ontario Orange. Then hes going to do some taping of different layers of paper then spray the tangerine remove a section spray again, remove another section then clear coat remove again then just clear coat on the original. He said this will give me a better idea of what the tinted clear will do as each coat will change the color. I am hoping that the tangerine will bring a deep depth to the paint without changing the color to much. Then I will also see what the original is likek with clear coat as well. Then I guess its decision time. I worked on a 68 camaro yesterday that he called the color corvette orange and said it was a factory camaro color in 68. I havent chcked on it yet but that was really nice as well.
Rich, I think its going to be a longgggggg time till I can get this thing to Sonic. I was out Wednesday night and a local guy that was in a corvair used to own a 72 vette and as we talked he said he still had his dist. shielding. I asked if he wanted to sell it and he delivered it today. Would only take $50 for it. I thought that was a steal! Made the trip to Sonic worth whjile although I think his corvair and my vette were the only cars with 8 cyls there! The rest were small foreign cars!

I can't believe you got the shields for 50 bucks!! That was one of the few things needed under the hood..and yes there is a V8 corvair in Red Lion..I think he lives on Franklin street..he sits on his front porch all day and stares at it..I think he is waiting for it to explode!!  and one of these project cars has to be done soon!!!  Yes there is a bunch of buzz bombs there on Wednseday..still fun to sit outside!  Good luck on the color..who is doing the paint job anyhow--I forgot to ask--I am in need of one of those--!!!

Corvair V-8, wowsers.... I once bought a fuse box at a gas station; paid the gut $20 and he actually sent it. On the color; if it's for you, paint it whatever you like; if it's for resale go original.

Ebo, yea its a v8 corvair! water pump on the motor sits about 4" away from the driver / Passenger seat. He said one time the front hose blew and he had hot water all over him and the car. Didnt sound that good. He has a cover for the engine but doesnt use it. The strangest thing is that when I was about 15 years old I used to mow his parents yard for about 3 years. Small world!
Rich, The guy doing the body work for me is from Red Lion. Name is John Leanard. He was certified to do vettes when he worked for Apple Ford in since the RL Chevy doesnt have a body shop. He had some back issues so they didnt keep him. You should stop by and check out his work. He seems to be very good with fiberglass. We are doing the body work at my house in my garage out back. When its ready for paint one of his other friends is going to paint it at a shop that has a bake booth. The good thing is he is working on it full time. This way it should get done in the next 2 weeks. I said full time but he only put in 23 hours this week! Body guys schedules are weird!!
Ive taken a bunch of pics as we go forward on this project but still havent figured out how to post them yet. I'll get it right one of these days! Just hasnt been my priority yet!
As for the shielding I was just lucky, but he also gave me a catolog that came from Sterners before they tore the building down that has a parts listing of part numbers and pictures of assembly for vettes from 62 - 82. He wouldnt sell that but he left me have it to look thru. Hes in no hurry to get it back so if you want to look give me a shout. I know I can use it for a while.

No decision yet on the paint, I am leaning toward the Kandy Tangerine and not the ontario orange. I seem to change my thoughts daily! Toughest decision I have ever made! As for the prep work on the body, we finished the front end and put it into primer last night. Now hopefully this week we can get the rear panels completed then finish with the doors and alignment. I really havent done much myself as I am no body man! The person doing the work for me is very picky and has done more then I was planning on. There are / were alot of things in the front wheel fender wells that I never even saw. And then behind the side louvers. He took care of all these areas. I know he keeps looking for other things as I am paying him by the hour and the more he finds the more he makes. I told him we arent going over a 100 hours for repairs. but where do you cut off? So far in the 2 weeks he has worked for me he has a total of 56 hours. The back end should go much faster as it doesnt have near the amount of issues as the front. But when I had the windshield removed there is probably a couple more hours of work to clean up and repair that area. Need some welding in the top support. The side posts are in very good shape. Ive been taking pics during this entire process and someday I will figure out how to post them.
As for the soda blasting of the parts to repaint and clean up, the blaster that I got from eastwood didnt work very well. I have made some changes to the design and I think I am good to go now. I hope to start cleaning parts this week.

Well the back end has issues as well. At some time during the cars life it had some work done on the back. The rear panel at the license plate / exhaust tips that is to separate has been glass together with the rear panel on the sides just above the exhaust tips. Not a big deal but why would they do that. Good thing is it can be repaired and put back the way it should be. The body man seems to love finding these issues! More money out of my pocket and into his! The rear quarters need some work around the seams. Oh yea, and I got that wonderful call today from him to bring my camera out to take a picture of the hood. Somehow Bubba must have done some body work there before and just used regular body filler so we had to cut it out and rematt it because it was a hole about 3" long and 1" wide straight thru! I gave up on the 100 hours I wanted to keep at and now I am hoping 150. The good thing is that last night he had the paint supplier stop in for a while and he brought some paint with him that when sprayed today I really liked. I am giving up on the factory paint! Just doesnt have the pop I am hoping to find. Welded the windshield support today and hoping to get some time this weekend to blast some parts. Ive been keeping tabs on the cost of this project but I tell myself I'm not totaling them till its done. Maybe not then either.
To be honest I dont think I did a good job on my homework before I bought this car. Not because I didnt expect to spend money but I am to picky and I havent figured out where to stop and except some older parts. Oh well, at least the wife isnt complaining yet! MORE TO COME!

IT was an easy choice for me.  My car was a medium red.  I chose to paint it Torch Red and I love it.  Of course it's far from original.  My wife wanted me to paint it Teal.

TEAL???   That's a minivan color (we had one)  NOT a Vette color.  Silly woman.  Aww  I still love her.

UPDATE:
we are now just completing week 8 of what I originally thought would be a 100 hour job to restore the body and paint. As stated before the body guy doesnt know what a 40 hour week is. The good news is that it is schedule to be in the paint booth next Saturday. We plan on spraying all the jambs and under hood and top deck on tuesday. I must say this has been a real eye opening experience. As i said before I thought 100 hours but we are now at 200 hours with a few to go. I let him do more than I originally planned. we took out all latches and hinges and he cleaned and sprayed them. I had to have him rebuild the bumper crossmember because I couldnt find one. Once the jambs are painted the doors, hood and deck go back on the car and it gets its final block sanding. I sure hope it turns out to be a straight no wavey body. Once its painted then the fun begins as I need to figure out how everything goes back on plus complete the interior. The bad part is that because of all the extra time it took to get to this point I am not sure I can do a motor at this time. May have to wait for next year. Christmas is coming and maybe Santa can help with an engine!
Best part is that I have the C3VR group to get any information needed to get to completion.
Thanks guys and gals for all your help!
Rodney

Well Rod, I'm sittin here looking at snow flakes in the air, the depression is already setting in, I've read my latest Vette mag front front to back and then back to front at least 6 times. I see your refresh on the paint job and it sounds like the extra dough will be a distant memory once the paint is layed down. As its always stated the paint job is all in the prep work, money well spent bud.

I have to say that with all the help from the site you really have only one way to show gratatude....

I went back and looked at every post on this thread and something very very important is missing...

THERE IS NOT ONE DANG PICTURE OF ANYTHING! Un acceptableShocked

here is a link that has the pics sorted in a little better order, you should be able to use the slide show as well in upper right hand corner.  I have more to add on Monday then I will be adding until the paint is complete hopefully next weekend! Still havent figured out how to make the link active without copy and pasting. Sorry.

Just got it painted this weekend. I added pics at the end of the album with the car just been pushed out of the Paint booth. The color is called Tangerine / Go Mango. Its a flop color depending on how the light hits it. It will look alot better I hope once the chrome and Cragars go on. Will have to wait a few weeks to let the paint dry so I dont scratch it. I get to bring it home later this week after the 3000 wet sand and buff. I'm excited to move on to the next task to get it completed.

Rodney---Great color selection!!Thumbs Up  I think you will have a real show stopper.Wink

I have gone through your album several times looking for details as I'm doing the exact same thing to my 72 coupe. However, color is NOT an issue.  Has to be the origional #979 Targa Blue.  I took mine to the paint shop two weeks ago, so I'm not as far along.  When I get some pics I will start a new thread and try and post before, during and after.  You have done a great job with the pictures and descriptions.

I have a few questions, if you don't mind.
How did you/Jon paint the egg crate side vents?  Did you mask the edges and front to leave exposed bright metal or did you paint the whole thing and use a razor blade to expose the bright work?
Did you have much rust on the bird cage and windshield frame?  Mine has some but we have not taken the trim off yet.
Did you look for the tank sticker?  I'm planning on dropping the tank as long as it's in pieces.
Are you painting the rally wheels?

It looks like you have a great project going and I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product.

I THINK, that 72 and Ontario Orange was a fire mist color. Only available in 71 and 72.  It is a deep pretty color. The tangerine is nice as well.  Congrats.

Thanks for all the positive comments on the car from everyone. I cant wait to get this project put behind me. The truth is that I will be on this until next summer because of the budget. Have to wait to do the motor until late spring. The body was double what I had originally thought it would be.

Dean,
The rally wheels are going to be removed and new Cragar SS (from the 70 Era) wheels will be put on. But yes I do plan on completely stripping and painting the wheels sometime this winter.
I have to drop the tank once I get the car home so I can redo the inside of the rear vents and also replace the neck boot. I am hoping to find a sticker but I think its probably been out before so I probably wont find one. My bird cage was in good shape, however the windshield frame had some rust on the passenger corner. Jon did some cutting and welding there. It also had some pit holes across the top at a few places, but all is repaired now.
As for the egg crate side panels / Louvers it was one of the things I wanted to be really nice. I think that is what actually drew me to the 72 model year. I stripped the paint off of them using paint stripper. Then I soda blasted them to get anything else off i missed. I could have spent more time on them but soda blasting is very slow and I got tired of doing it! Once done Jon block sanded the edges with 400. Then I wiped them down with a cleaner / wax remover then they put 4 coats of paint on them. Let them sit overnite then block sanded them again with 400 to get the paint off the edges. Then they were clear coated with 3 coats. I could have done a little better but i think they turned out good. We did the same thing with the stainless trims that go just below the windshield where we painted, then untaped and clear coated the trims.
