OK here comes some fun, I so hate electrical problems!Angry
Just went to start the car to wash off the bugs....its dead....fried another coil! Ken called and said I have a grounding problem. I'm off to borrow an ohm meter.
I know when I first went to start the car this season the battey was dead. And now while I think of it the battery before that would die quite often.
The tach has not worked for a while.
So throw out all the stuff you think I need to remove and clean......

The good news is the car got me home and into the garage before it totally quit....
I'm still smileing just a small speed bump thats all.......

Glad you made it home with out a repeat of the earlier meltdown.
Besides cleaning grounding connections, the cables themselves can have corrosion inside the cable that can increase it,s resistance to the point yhat the current is nill. If you see green crude inside the jacketing you may want to replace that wire/cable.  Check the resisitance of the wire with the meter.
Have fun and good luck,
Dave

I'm still battling my own electrical gremlins. Yer on yer own brother! lol.

Check the ground strap from the firewall to the engine. And then check out negative battery. Other than that...I dunno.

This is fun!! So are you SURE its the coil or is it the china module?? Lol..blowing a coil is a tough thing to do..either you have low primary voltage or high voltage drop on the ground..why is your battery dead??. What's drawing down..pull fuses untill you get low draw... 5 millivolt max..new cars are half that so it should be very low..chances are the coil had low kv output by the time you got home..you just didn't notice it..you put new wires on not long ago so I dought they are bad..is the wiring inside the distributor ok..sometimes the pick up coil does some weird stuff..I had one that threw a fit and would not allow the car to start..a little work to install but it is one constant with your car..oh and don't borrow a dvom..just buy one..your gonna need it..again..and again..and again..

So glad we did not get the rain that Ill and Ohio is getting now!
Wow
Car was running rougher along the way, just glad she got us home before it quit.
So what time will you be getting here tomorrow Rich?

So it was self inflicted..try taking some pics of stuff before you take things apart..its nice to see things zoom in and zoom out!! And I always use my favorite saying when someone tells me they fixed the problem..ARE YOU SURE?? I always get the confused look.

Sure??? with these cars........LOL
I think that solves this part of the coil puzzel, looking back all the ignition pboblems all started after my fantastic tune up!!!
Evil Smileebo
That was the first HEI tune up I have ever done. When I was asked if I had the secondary ground starp on I thought it was the bracket's around the coil. When I put the new cap on I ASSumed it was complete and did not need any parts taken out of the old oneConfusedOuchAngry

I thought you said that thing was melted when you opened it up when it broke down on ya? Or was that someone else?

Without that ground tang, the coil basically has NO ground....it will back-ground thru the coil/module. Annudder tip too...when you install a new coil or re-install an old one, be sure that the ground wire with the eyelet(on the coil itself) goes to the same screw that goes thru that terminal in your pic. That will give the coil the best ground possible, and not force the ground circuit to go thru the casing of the coil.

Glad ya got it figured out.....silly boy! It's ALWAYS the simple stuff that gets ya....

Most parts stores will not take back any electrical parts, but you can try. Glad you made it home and glad you finnaly got it fixed. I can give you a meter, I got about 4 of them. I'll bring it up when we come up for the show at the lake.
