Now if someone goes to the trouble of peaking through the slots in my Rally's they may think I have Brembos in there!

I'm going to do red calipers on mine when I change from rally wheels to Torque Thrust D's in a few years.

I think they look good! Not much chance of seeing them through either stock wheel, though.

Great look, Barry I think you would be surprised how much they do show. I used an Eastwood kit on my Burb. Did the hubs in a black, and the calipers gold. They came out great and its pretty simple.

Thank guys!  I hope they do show a little bit - my interior is red!  I used VHT caliper paint - still have to bake 'em for 1 hour at 200 degrees.  Think I'm going to use the gas grill - I don't think mama wants calipers in her oven!

I also used the Eastwood kit. You brush it on. I really didn't like the results. It had brush marks that didn't level out. I took (cleaned) everything back down to bare metal. Then used VHT caliper spray paint. It's good for 900 Degrees F. Here is the good part...........when momma wasn't around I cured the calipers in her oven.... (200 degrees F. for 20 minutes). Mommas kind of get (lets say) un-happy about these things............though! I still have some bruises if you care to see them...... I'm wondering if they'll ever heal.................Winkl

For smaller items like this, you can get a cheapo toaster oven pretty cheap, and leave it in da ge-raj. Might be able to only do one side at a time, but, it's worth it to keeps Mama happy, eh? Right fellers? Right?Ouch

Mamma says that I NOW can use her oven ANYTIME I want................................as long as it's in the garage and she has a NEW one in the kitchen.............WOMEN!!!.........they're never happy................... (except for ebowoman.............I wonder what he's do-in!) Oh and by the way, I did wire the calipers to hang from the baking racks to not leave any telltale marks on the calipers or the bake racks. Again................the only telltale marks that were left was........................ON MY body parts................women just don't get it................!Wink

So was there a tell-tale smell in the kitchen when you were done?  That's what I'm concerned about.  Good idear on the toaster oven, Joel.  I have some valve covers that I want to do, though - I think I'll be OK with the gas grill.  It has a thermometer and as long as I can raise them off the grates I think it'll work out.

Wish my garage had room for an oven (&220 - would have to do some wiring) - I'd pick one up off Craigslist for $50 or so.   But then I'd want to get that Eastwood powder coating kit to do this kind of stuff.

Dave, yes there was "the smell"....kinda/sorta. I put on the hood exhaust fan and also the Jennaire exhaust fan. I opened the patio door to bring in fresh air to replace the smelly exhaust air. ................I have a toaster oven in the garage, but it can only do small stuff. I used it to powder coat steel pieces that were rusty inside my AC/heat ductwork. I had to drill out the rivets. then re-install new rivets later. The rack inside left little marks were the parts rested. (no one will actually see them) That's why I like to hang the parts by wires........but not enough room in the small oven. By the way I used the cheapy Harbor Freight Powder Coat set up.........it worked ok. I'm sure the Eastwood would be a bit better

Hey Dave. I like it. I've often thought about doing that to mine. I just didn't know how much it would show with Rally's. If ya don't mind could ya post a pic when you have the wheels on? Thanks, "T"

Dave, here is a picture after the curing...............my wife took it. She gets mad at me for not taking pictures, she says no one will know all that I did. I tell her that I'll know, but she sneaks around taking pictures.

I'm still waiting for the caliper rebuild kits to come from Zip, then I'll actually have to rebuild and install. But when that's done (hopefully in a few weeks) I'll mount a wheel and take some pics. I'm pretty curious myself!

Dave's above response got posted as a new thread somewhere else....don't know why. I couldn't move it here like we used to be able to, so I had to do the "Quote" thing....

Dave, I ain't sure what the heck is goin on with the posts, but, as a reminder, PLEASE make sure you are hitting the "Post Reply" button when you want to make a  new post, and not the "New Topic" button. With the change in the forumware, the buttons have been moved from where they were before. That's the only reason I can think of for the posts being turned into new topics with new titles. Ouch

The BBQ, really scares me............how do you control the actual temperature? What about the paint actually flareing up?..............I like to hang the stuff to not leave the grill grid marks.

Well I'm thinking about trying the BBQ this weekend will let you know how it goes.  My grill has a second rack above the main one, I'll probably but the caliper halves up there.  And since they're still apart I'll put the mating side down so grill marks shouldn't be a problem.

But the rains are already upon us here in the great Pacific NW so I may not get to it this weekend. Cry

Baked the calipers in my BBQ today - worked fine!  You have to babysit it a lot since there's no automatic temp control like in an oven, but if you're willing to do that, no worries about mama complaining about smoke/smells in her kitchen.  Wink  Also did my valve covers that I painted with VHT engine paint (yep, you have to bake that, too) and they came out looking pretty good as well.

And we had a great October day here in the Portland/Vancouver area - no baking in the rain!

Well we did cook a Tri-tip on the grill, but that was the night before.  I had to cook all the remnants out before I started the caliper baking - didn't want Tri-tip stains on my Delcos!

Cool that your brother-in-law lives here.  No Corvette, I take it?  Always looking for local contacts!  If you ever come out to visit look me up.

Tri-tip: The tri-tip is a cut of beef from the bottom sirloin primal cut.[1] It is a small triangular muscle, usually 1.5 to 2.5 lbs. (675 to 1,150g) per side of beef.  Read the rest here, or just take it from me, with a good marinade, a very tasty roast for grilling.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tri-tip

In the interest of staying on topic, though, I got my rebuild kits from Zip yesterday.  Will be putting the calipers together soon and posting pics of them mounted, both with and without wheels.  Can't wait!  (I'll size the pics small this time - noticed my original pic was converted to a link since it was too big.)

Dave, wow never heard of that............sure sounds good! Post the picks when you can. Another reminder, I did a recoat of the VHT Caliper paint after I mounted them. I used the clear, just to add a little more protection from knicks. The extra top coating will cure with the heat from using the brakes. Have fun!

Dave, I just seen that Eastwood makes a hotcoat powder finish gun that can be stepped up from 15kv to 25kv...........enabling bigger parts to be done easier. It's adjustable, the transformer setting. But of course you'll have to go out and buy a biiiiiger grillWink. It's pretty cool or hot however you choose to view it.

I didn't see the clear at the parts store when I bought the VHT red caliper paint.  I'll have to check around to see if I can find it.

And the powder coating kit would be awesome.  Someday when I get my shop....

Here they are again...........I dumped a bunch of old stuff and probably dumped the picture also.............

They look good on the frame, Larry!  Pretty exciting.  So what's your time frame?  I feel like I'm never going to get mine on the road and I've got a body and interior in mine.  (Just no engine and now brakes).

Thanks again for the advice and I'll check out that VHT Clear!

Dave, I know how you feel about the never getting on the road again. Just take your time to make sure that you get everything done 100%. No one can satisfy to your perfection but you. At least that's how it works for me. Timeline: Got to get the body on, then have to do all the wiring, get radiator, condenser, ac plumbed, whole interior, dash ductwork, rear glass, everything aligned, body sanded filled, painted, new hood fitted, sound system etc............man I got a headache thinking about it........ Anyhow, I'm looking forward to the winter, so that I can devote a lot of time into the project. I would love to have it on the road by next summer, painted or not. Thanks for asking.
