1928 Ford Model A Tudor

Patty's Uncle Ronald bought this car in 1951 from the original owner.  At the time it had around 5,000 miles on it - now it has just over 38,000.  In nearly 35 years of being in the family I've only seen the car running once - and that was in 1979 or 1980.  It has been stored in his garage for the past 25+ years until we brought it into the daylight a couple of weeks ago.  Uncle Ronald will 90 next year and is starting to part with things.  Patty wanted to keep the car in the family.  Now it is sitting in the corner of our garage.

When he parked the car Uncle Ronald drained the coolant, pulled the plugs and oiled the cylinders, and pulled the battery out of it.  That's all...!!!  Curiousity was killing me so even before unloading it I put the starting crank in and gave the engine a gentle revolution.  IT WAS FREE...!!!  I didn't hear any screeching, crunchinig, or grinding so guessing the engine is ok.  Before trying to get it running I plan to change all the fluids, repack wheel bearings, replace belts, hoses, tires, and battery.  Will have to flush the gas tank and probably should get the radiator checked out just to be safe.  (Just what I need - more projects...!!!)

Overall the car is in pretty good shape.  Originally it was a dark blue with black fenders but Uncle Ronald thought that was a bit too drab so he had the body painted to "spruce it up a bit".  The interior is original and a tad musty but hopefully putting some dryer sheets in it over the winter will freshen it up a bit.

Somewhere along the line Uncle Ronald picked up a spare engine and transmission so may sell that to help fund the refurbishing project.  Quite a few other odds and ends came with the car and anything else related to the car that Uncle Ronald finds while cleaning out his garage and basement will come our way.  A neighbor down the road is a Model T/Model A collector and he has already offered his assistance in getting the car running and to be a mentor to this "youngin'"...!!!

"See the U.S.A. in your Model A......."  Somehow that just doesn't sound right.  LOL

Oh god no!  Find an old junker and fix it up. I'd love a nice 2 door sedan rod, but Jim's is pristine, besides, it would just kill his uncle.

Yes - it does have the famous AHH-UUG-AHH horn.  It also has a wolf whistle plumbed into the intake manifold (which I'm sure is going to get me in plenty of hot water).

Actually we haven't discussed an nickname yet.  "Little Putt-Putt" comes to mind but I can guarantee you that I will not have the final vote on what it will be.

What's that you're sayin' Sonny...!!!  Speak up will ya, I'm a little deef don't 'cha know...!!!  One of Uncle Ronald's biggest fears was that "The A" would fall into a "Hot Rodder's" hands.  He kept the car in its original condition so it could be appreciated as a piece of American history.  We plan to only replace that which needs replacing and keep it as a driver.

Actually the Model T was nick-named the Flivver, as well as The Tin-Lizzie.

Will have more pics as the clean-up and refurbishing gets under way.

Thumbs Up VERY VERY nice!  I think I would keep the Extra parts you have. Never know when the time comes to NEED something and say, "WISH I'd kept that thing".  Do we need to take up a collection for the Violin Case, and the "CONTENTS" to put in it?  Wink   Enjoy!

How about calling her "T-Bone" T, because it's a model T, and bone because she's just about bone stock...(other than the color). That wolf whistle sure can help express oneself except when the wife is around.

Congratulations on the new addition Jim. Here's Dr. Terry's advise on your project. First of all fuel delivery. I would make dang sure the gas tank isn't filled with old gas. In time gas turns to varnish and if not cleaned out real good, on first fire it will all end up in the carb. I have a boil-out tank that cleans the gas out. You may want to call your friendly rad shops to see if they do that. If its rust that doesn't clean out I coat the inside. Also make sure the fuel lines and carb are clean. As far as the rad, yes I would pull it and have it cleaned and tested. If the cooling system has been empty for a long time lil meeces love to built homes in the radiator.
You already know the best place to send this stuff, however the shipping would kill ya. Otherwise you could throw the rad and tank in The Beast and take a cruise over. We would love to see you guy's.Thumbs Up
Enjoy!!

Umm, becuz it is a Model A it would have to be A-Bone.  Somehow I don't think Patty will go for that!

Yep, dropping the fuel tank will be a priority.  Got some research to do as the tank is behind the firewall tucked under the dash.  Uncle Ronald told us that there was a little gas in the tank when he parked it.  I haven't been brave enough to take a peek in there yet.  I'm sure the carb is going to need some cleaning out too.

Will probably take both the radiator and the fuel tank to the local shop that rebuilt "BIGBRRD's" radiator.  They are near where I work so it would be easy to drop off and pick up on the way home.

Wally's (sundew) brother-in-law told him about an adapter that will allow a Chevy S10 pickup 5 speed tranny to be bolted up inplace of the original 3 speed.  That would probably be the only modification considered if we were to do any cross country tripping in it.

Nice addition Jim!
Keep it stock and take it to the local cruise ins. You will meet a lot of guys that appreciate Model As. I'll bet there is a local club that will offer you lots of help.

There is a very active Model A club here in the Twin Cities and a fellow down the road from me is very deep into the club.  He is 80 years young, has several Model As and has owned his 1910 Model T since he was 14 years old.  He has been a great resource already and has offered to assist me with getting the motor running, checking the brakes, and everything in general.  I feel like every time I talk to him I should be recording the conversation because he knows so much about these cars.  Just looking at the number on the Pioneer licence plate on the car he guessed within a year of when Uncle Ronald put the plate on the car!
