Hey folks..
Please make sure threads stay on topic.
I've noticed lately that many threads wind up going into a joking and ribbing mode, which is fine in the fact that no one is being mean and no one is being offended, but it does bring down the usefulness of the original topic of discussion and people will start to ignore a thread for that reason.
I have gotten some feedback that the overall tone of the site is going to more of a casual discussion board than C3 tech.

Moderators have been given instructions to keep watch for threads getting off-topic and to remove off-topics posts from a thread.

If you have any questions or comments about this policy, please let me know via reply to this thread, PM or email.

Thanks!

Point taken.

On the casual note. I would not be here as much if it was all tech. It's the casual "we are all family" bit that makes this site and I think that is proven every day.

I enjoy taken the ribbing and think it's pretty well behaved.
Life is short a smile and a chuckle a day will never hurt.

I'm not suggesting that a little ribbing or fun is not allowed here.  What I'm saying is when a thread about brakes squealing has more posts of having fun than it does about the brake squeal, the thread has gotten off topic.
There are plenty of forums here for off-topic conversation.
I'm just suggesting that you consider the topic of the thread before you reply, and take a look at the direction of the thread.  If it seems like the last few posts have been more having fun than staying on topic, it is time to get back on-topic.

Thanks!

I agree with EBO, its the causal way around here that keeps me paying my dues every year along with the tech., personally I believe in the 500 posts I've contributed, I might have joked or ribbed maybe a dozen times, and I don't think thats getting off topic, or have I read more than a handful of threads in 8 years that were starting to sound a little dumb cause of jokes or ribbing, when your at home and some friends come over and maybe your in the garage B.S.in having  a drink, watchin  NASCAR, drags, working on the car, whatever, during the conversation what happens.....RIGHT!..., you start to JACK each other UP with jokes and ribbing, and thats part of the fun, I don't know what upset Adam but please lets not Obamasize the C3VR.......that was a joke?!

Just a thought...the question has been asked on more than one occasion, why aren't  the C4, C5, or C6 sites as popular as C3VR? Well, I have always answered that it's the people and attitudes here that keep people here. I know that's why I purchased a Lifetime Membership. I understand Adam's point... I too see no reason to turn a tech issue into a long thread of jokes. But I also enjoy the threads that are just buddies joking around. This site seems very successful to me. I think it will be fine.

There are/have been several threads that started out with tech questions, or help requests, that turned into joke-fests, or our normal, good natured ribbing of one another. We really need to keep the threads on the original topic, and not lose sight of what the originator of the thread was looking for.
I'm as guilty as anyone of throwing a little humor into my responses in the threads, but I also respond to the original question.
It's not always jokes or humor that gets a thread off topic. It can also be another question thrown in from another member on a similar, but different subject. You'll see a topic listed as "Brake problem", and by the last post, it's about fuel filters, or something.
This is just a friendly reminder to everyone to try to keep the posts related to the original topic, that's all.
On my Goldwing forum, there is a thread on downloading  service manuals...at least it started that way. Five pages later, it's a discussion about fixing an ignition issue with one person's bike. It's quite annoying, at least to me.

I agree with the stay on topic and have no issues at all with that, Joel is right that is does get annoying when it jumps tracks.
What did bother me was the "feedback that it has become more casual then tech". If you take a tally of the days post 75% or better I'd class as Tech. Not counting the largest topic  "Welcome", now I hope there is no complaint about that?  If we did not have "Welcome" this great site might not be here.
I know that if the post has no interest to me I just DON"T open it............DUH.

I will now shut up..................case closed.............Evil Smile

I do recall a post I started about my wiper door raising up a bit when I turn the key off. After I got some serious response it was suggested, I won't mention any names "Apple", to put a brick on it. LOL It went into a long discussion about type of brick and whether it was NCRS approved. Now I love that kinda stuff, and most of you know that. One thing that kinda bothers me is when someone sees a buddy in the post and starts a conversation with him about personal stuff. We have topics and PM's for everything necessary here. If it don't fit any specific topic through it in Chit-chat. I love the people I've met here and know them on a personal level. There is a topic for communication with them, and thats not tech related. There my .02, "T"

I would just let the chips fall where they may, so to speak.  Unless the thread is getting excessive, let it go. This is more of a family setting than a tech seminar. I agree there is a point, but very few times have I thought it got that far in here.
People are funny about restrictions and there certainly are plenty of choices of forums to visit these days.

There are plenty of tech articles and posts to be researched in this forum and if a person askes a question of the tech sort, it usually gets an answer pretty fast.

Larry, I think we're all still good here.  I can understand the fine line Adam is trying to tread and why.  I think the guideline of "if the last couple of posts" is probably good.  Will there be times where something is just too darn funny to not comment?  Yup.  Are you going to get kicked off the site when that happens?  Nope.  We just want to make sure that folks that are here trying us out or just trying to get some good info meet that goal.  We also want it to be fun so everyone wants to stick around.
We can have fun and still get something accomplished at the same time manget12009-06-10 17:42:05

Everyone who has responded to this thread so far have made some good points.  And as far as I can tell no one has gotten too upset about anything.

I think Marshall has summed it up pretty well.  We are a family of C3 Corvette enthusiasts who love our cars and are willing to share our knowledge and experience about them with each other.  We also enjoy each other's company and as a result the garage (and parking lot) conversations tend to wander around a bit.  So when conversations tend to stray too far from the center a gentle nudge should be all that is needed to bring them back in focus.

And as Joel pointed out, if the topic of a thread is about something at the front of the car the thread should stay on that topic and not morph into something about a topic at the back of the car.  That makes it difficult for everyone (newbees and lifers) especially when trying to dredge through the forums looking for a particular topic.

It should also be noted that all of the moderators are members of the C3VR family who volunteer their time on the site to be helpful to everyone and to try to keep things in check.  So when one of them suggests that a topic is getting off topic it is done so with purpose and respect for all of the individuals.  There is no intent to target or single out anyone.  Only in the most extreme set of circumstances does a situation need to be handled off-line and I can honestly say that in all the years I've been a part of the C3VR family something like that has only happened a few times.  That fact in and of itself speaks volumes for the integrity and mutual respect this group of very diverse, and yet very similar, people scattered around the globe has for each other.  I tip my hat to all of you.

I have to ask if their is a thread up right now that could please be used as an example of what not to do.

I had a thread about the air cleaner pan on the 70, it got some good feedback and Ebo and I had some fun towards the end.

Is that stuff off limits or would you like us to start another topic somewhere when it turns more fun than tech?

Thats why an example or two would really help.

I like the way the threads kind of have a "natural progression" to them.

I think this site is great just like it is. I mean theres plenty of good info and kidding here. Have I been scolded to stay on topic, yes a few times. Do I let it upset me, NO! Some of these posts would go on such a tangent you would never know how it started. I appreciate the work the moderators do to keep things in line. This is still the site I enjoy coming to most and am looking forward to seeing many of you at the gathering. If someone wants to get their panties in a bunch and leave, I'm sorry but let them. I'll still be here with my buddies! Long live C3VR!

Rich, I would really doubt that someone left the forum because moderators reminded folks to try to stay on topic from time to time....if someone did, that would just be silly....

I don't know any time since I became a member in 2004 when discussions were so highly scrutinized that members started getting upset...

It's been a great place and I personally believe it still is, and possibly better with the current crowd. Wink

Each night I come to this site for information and to catch up on what everyone is doing. I find this group of members to be more then just a technical page of a manual. I realize the importance of being able to search for information by topic, but it takes just a few seconds to move to the next post if it doesnt have the information you are looking for. Since joining this forum a few years ago I have made some great friends that I enjoy talking too, some I have personally met and others I hope to meet some time in the future. I belong to 2 other vette forums and I can honestly say I go to those sites just to see if there is anything that will benefit ME. I come to this site to see if I can help someone or to get respectable information. I share with this group were the other groups I am selfish and just take from.
The difference is that this group is "FAMILY" to me.
I believe it comes from the ribbing and babbling we do with each other at times.
With that said, my thanks to the group owner and moderators for allowing us to post daily and to voice our opinions. Its a great management group with a GREAT group of fun and helpful members. Both are needed to have a great FAMILY.
I'm happy here!
Thanks Again,
Rodney

I think this is what we are talking about..staying in topic..OBAMA is a thread on itself..it's tough for me to do that also since I only see a tiny bit of what goes on here..you can always start one on him if you like..I am not saying you can't by all means..I think that was from 09 anyhow..

Larry (corvette 440) still comes on the site but chooses not to post. He never missed a birthday and was a great ambassador for C3, I miss his posting humor.
Trust me he is alive and well and since he is not on as much, he has his 69 frame off in full swing he just coated the frame this week. If any one wants to see pictures PM me.
I promiss this will be the last time this year I'll stray off topic.............Shocked

I've been with C3VR since Dec. '01. C3VR was only 1 month old. This forum, club, family or whatever you may consider it HAS CHANGED. I used to enjoy coming on here daily and posting frequently, but it isn't the same as it once was. Don't get me wrong. C3VR is still a fine site and all, and I have made quite a few friends here. So I'm not bashing the site, but stating that the site has changed over the years.
Sorry to get off topic.

how about this, combine "off topic, humor, anything goes", forums into one forum, that way you talk about any of the other forums, have fun, blur the lines, be offensive, and just screw off, and call it the " Incorrect topic  forum", and please no photos of naked old people!.....tryed to get into the "humor and anything goes" forums and couldn't, it said I had to have permission, are those forums like porns sites, do you have to pay extra?

The written word seems so volatile. interpreted a little differently by each who read. Hopefully this site is important enough to all to give the benefit of any doubt as to the intent of all that is posted here. We all know that we are a very select group. Hopefully the love will prevail.

Glad to hear it Mark..as it wouldn't be the same without ya!..I see that the point to a forum is to pick a topic and try to stick with it..if you get off course to far then the moderator steers it back in place..seems simple but not easy to do sometimes..I understand the point now that if some one is looking for an answer thru the search function and it ends up talking about ice cream then it doesn't help all that much..LOL

Hello,

Now that I have made a significant improvement on the fuel issues I've found that I can block off sections of the vacuum system and get a change in the high idle problem I have been chaseing for over a year.  Looking at the fourm topics, where would this type of troubleshooting fit in?  It is not really an engine, fuel or electrical match so, I'm open to direction.

Thanks

Keith

It would go in the "Engine" forum. It has to do with how the engine is running, but it is not specifically a fuel, or electrical issue, at this point. The Engine forum is the place to be...and so you shall be shortly.

Great!  Thanks Joel.  I'm still mulling over the membership renewal options.  My x boss allways told me "If you don't think too good, don't think too fast."
