1) is the NCM the only place to purchase a copy of a built sheet and window sticker? They seem pretty proud of their service (expensive).

2) anyone find there's on a CE? I've heard the can be above the gas tank, above the differential, near the power antannae. I've replaced the mast in my antannae, so I know it's not there.

Thanks!

If it is in the location above gas tank, how do you get it out?

I am not thrilled about taking anything apart (not ready for a restoration) just to get the sheet.

A lot of T.L.C.,you have to drop the tank,it is glued to the top ,dont pull on it ,you will destroy it and you probably wont be able to read it anyway |eek| |frown|

I found my build sheet on the front of the gas tank. I pulled my spare tire carrier and the sheet was glued at the top only.Right above the rear spring behind the carrier assy. Was able to retrieve the complete sheet. Car was built on 5/12/79 and was 15065th off the line and was shipped to Omaha,Nebraska. Happy hunting.. |thumb| PS You have to drill out two rivets to get the top half of the spare cover top shield off. Replace with two sheet metal screws. Use flashlight first to see if yours is on the front.

Found my build sheet for my 78 on the top of the gas tank on the drivers side. With a flashlight, you should be able to see the edge over the front of the tank. Funny thing is that the window stickers shows a MM4 transmission but the build sheet shows a M20 which was standard in 77. The car build date is 12/7/77.
Does anyone know of a company that can restore the build sheets? Mine is in good shape, just want to get it cleaned up and protected. There was some information on the top section not legible, however all the options are clearly listed.

Eric, the M20 is the wide ratio 4 speed which you had to get with the L48. The M21 close ratio was available with the L82 but the option form had to be checked, otherwise you got the M20.According to the Black Book only 3385 78's built with the M21. Both my 78's have MX1 auto on the window stickers but M38 on the build sheet. Don't know why, tho.How much info are you missing at the top of the form? One of mine was pretty bad but when I started comparing it to some others a lot of the info seemed to just pop up. Made a copy by cut and pasting on a blank sheet. Got the blank sheet by white-outing a photo copy of a good sheet. Don't know how you would preserve the bad one without spending bucks for an expert. I keep the original raggedy one in my folder with my homemade "reproduction" one. Have a pristeen copy from my 79 that I could TRY to email so you could compare, most of the info is the same. Mike

I have been working on the Blacray now that is the Mod. season in Indiana. While I was changing the shocks in the back I thought I would look some for mine.

I hadn't ever before because I know that prior to me the car has lived a less than pristine life. Much to my surprise I found a portion of mine dangling yet from the front of the tank. Most of it is illedgible but you can make out what it is supposed to be.

If anyone has a PDF version or a photo copy of a blank tank sticker that they can e-mail me that would be cool. If you want to PM me I will provide you my e-mail address.

I would like to create one based on the information I have and laminate both. I have a pretty nice display / information binder that I have created since acquiring this car. Hopefully future owners will appreciate the time, money, and passion that have been returned to the car during my tenure.

I was able to get a copy of the original invoice from:
GM Media Archive & Vehicle Invoice Collection at Allied Vaughn
Detroit, MI
p.734-421-0273 x.107
p.734-261-5086
f.734-261-5216
vehicleinvoice@gmmediaarchive.com
...not as good as a build sheet but was a lot less work and cleaner than dropping the fuel tank and hoping.
Cost was $ 50 for a pdf file

The NCM build sheet service is limited to Bowling Green Corvettes thereby not including any from the St Louis factory or anything before 1981.

This is among a few "pecularities" during the ordering/production of the 1978 models and once you understand how the system works, it makes better sense.

RPO MM4 is a generic ordering code for a four-speed transmission but what was called out on the build sheet was dependent on the motor option ordered which would call out the specific tranny type. So, when MM4 and L82 was specified, than the build sheet calls out the M20 Borg Warner four-speed broadcast code of ZU. When MM4 and L48 was specified, the build sheet calls out the economy cast iron Muncie four-speed with a different broadcast code. The M21 when ordered, the build sheet shows a ZW.

In my research, I've studied one L48 M20 and believe the broadcast code to be S6 but unable to confirm via a build sheet.

So the MM4 because it had two tranny options, was linked to motor type which than called out the exact part for that particular installation.

Ditto.  I was able to get a copy of the dealer invoice for my '80 through Allied-Vaughn.  No complaints.

Technically, the invoice was prepared from the information on the build sheet, so the two would be the same with the exception of format and  costs.  The invoice lists prices, shipping and destination charges, etc. and also lists the date the car was scheduled to be shipped from St. Louis and expected delivery date at the dealership.

My sweetie was built on 3/3/80, so she has a birthday coming up.
