Ok everyone I can use some information. Below are some pics of the newest member of my family. She is a 69 427/435 tri-power (i believe). The #s on the block, tranny and rear end match however i would like to get some other input if possible (sometimes you can stare @ a picture too long). It has had some wacky Mako kit installed, it seems both the front end and the rear end match but the front fender grills appear to be from a 70-72 (maybe they didn't make this kit for a 69'?). Anyway here is the info on my car, please add to the thread or drop me a line to my external e-mail. Oh also the frame is straight and rust free, the interior isn't bad with the exception of the driver seat and 1 kick-panel.

Thanks for any/all help,

Tom

PS. Also of note this has 6 tail lights, on the center console it has warning lights for all 6 instead of the normal 4... this leads me to believe (along with the lack of seams in the fiberglass) that this Mako was part of a factory kit or something.

Not sure exactly where within the eBay world these photos reside, but if they're associated with the auction item they will disappear at some point in time.

Tom

According to the serial number the car was built in september 1968. The engine build date was september 24, 68. Check on the drivers door and look at the data plate. That will tell you the paint code, trim code and build date of the car. The engine date must be prior to the car build date to be an original engine. To determine if it was truly a 435hp car first it can't have air conditioning. From the photos it did not appear that it had AC. Good start. Second it should have a 6500 redline tach and have a rear sway bar. All 435 hp cars has transisterized ignitions. Look for three holes in the left front inner fender (if the black amp is gone). The alternator part number should be 1100825 or 1100882. The casting for the heads should be 3919840.

Good call! Don't forget the big block cars also had a larger diameter front sway bar.

As far as the "Mako" kit I think you are mistaken there. The Mako shark has no resemblense to this bodywork.

Looks more like 70 to 72 front fenders with aftermarket wheelwell flairs, to me. I would bet it was a California car at one time. In California, they liked to add a extra taillight to each side so that you had 6 instead of the factory 4.

Saw many of them added to mid year cars back in the 70's.

Looks like a good solid car though. Shure has the good drivetrain in it. Be glad that you beat me to it or I would own it instead of you.

Ok folks here is the update. The #s I found on the trim panel (inside driver’s side door) reads as follows “Chevrolet C03, Trim 704, 972 Paint”. I don’t know where the date code is unless the C03 is it? The car has been repainted several times from what I can see so if there was a sticker there its long gone.

Now regarding the flair kit, you were right it was a Cali car until last week however this doesn’t seem like a cheap-o kit someone just threw on it as someone changed the warning lights inside the car to reflect 6 tail lights instead of the factory 4 (see pic). Also the glass work is really top notch if all they did was cut and add the flairs, the rear end to me seems like some sort of kit. The front looks the same way also as the flairs are VERY nicely done (I have seen some sloppy flair kits before).

I think I am going to leave the body the way it is for right now, I might just relocate the front lights under the grill (I have seen this before and it looks tough). I know the fins don’t match a 69 but as it stands right now at least it looks complete, the ideal situation would be to find a rusted out 68/69 with a blown motor for cheap and just switch the bodies (so if you know of any PLEASE look me up I am in the market). Anyway please have a look at the new pics I have taken (and I even moved the other ones) any suggestions/information is always appreciated!

Tom

PS. I am SERIOUSLY in the market for a 3x2 intake setup for this car, if you have one (casting # 3937797) PLEASE get in touch!

There is an excellent chance the engine is original. The C03 represents October 3, 1969. The engine build date is September 24, 1969 so the time frame is about right. A little tight as it usually is no earlier than 2 weeks difference, but you should be OK on this as it was early in the build year. To be sure, look for the casting date on the block. It should be prior to September 24th. The casting date will be on the passenger side of the engine, usually upside down. Or later 69's had it on the passenger side above the bell housing. G= July, H = August, I = September, J = October.

The 972 is the paint code and it stands for Cam-Am White. The 704 is actually ZQ4 and it stands for standard interior which was black vinyl.

Corvette427,

I can't seem to locate any of those letters, the only one i saw was a P that was on the driver side next to the casting #s (3955270, it is a 270 instead of a 210).

Update....

It had a blown head gasket and one of the heads is cracked. My friend said they should be able to fix it so tomorrow they go to the machine shop. I filled the cylinders up with oil to see if they will leak down(my friend said this is an easy way to see if the rings have a problem), i should know in the morning. I also learned that is has roller rocker arms but NOT roller lifters and i suspect the cam isn't a roller either :( so sometime tomorrow or this week i will pop into A&E and see what i should do about that, while i'm there i may look into a different intake manifold as the one thats on it is too high for my hood :(

More tomorrow......

Tom

PS. Also of note my friend has seen a shizit load of remarked blocks, when he inspected mine he was almost 100% postitive that mine was NOT a remark :)

hey tom, you can have roller rockers, without a roller cam, but if you have a roller cam you must use roller lifters. As for the numbers on the heads.3964291 are 69-70 rectangular port heads A1970 IS JANUARY 19 1970.GMIT, I can only guess the GM means general motors the IT I don't know. |saluteflag|

Thx Jack :)

Update: The cylinders didn't leak down so it looks like i have good rings! The machine shop said the worst case i'm looking at is $400.00 to do both of the heads (thats with new hardened seats). I got estimates from A&E on the parts i'm going to need to put it back together (about $250.00) so all told i don't think thats too expensive considering the heads will be done right.

More later....

Congrats on the good fortune...hope it's not premature. No question you'll enjoy that beast. If it's anything like my '69 427/435, it's barely civilized (mine has an L88 cam instead of the stock grind). People always look at a Corvette simply because it's a Vette, but I've noticed when driving this beast their eyes always tend to stare at the 4-2-7 on the hood.

The way people look at you driving that car kinda makes a guy feel like a well equipped porn star!

Update for everyone....

I got the heads back, the "plugs" that were in it looked HIDIOUS so i removed them only to find that they are a PAIN IN THE BUTT to replace with even "semi-factory" ones, i believe that goodyear will have brass plugs that will work and look good. I found a matching intake on e-bay $604, carbs $1097 (these are new in the box), and an air cleaner $450. Ecklers had the decal and filter element for the air cleaner so it all starts going back together soon. More to come later :D

Tom

PS. If anyone has a NICE close up pic of the air cleaner on a 69 427 tri-power i would be forever endebted to them to them if you could get a clear pic of the linkage and air cleaner cover, this will help a bunch when i go to put this gimmick together :D
