I'm curious...any Pace Car with a yellow rim? I'm doing some research on the use of the yellow spare tire rim used in 1978 and have traced it to about mar 2 78. Curious if any got equipped on the Pace Cars.

Tom,

Early 1978's had the car wheel painted yellow(a shade similiar to "traffic yellow"). But most later wheels were semi gloss black. The valve stems and valve caps were black. My PC has the black spare tire under it and it was made in March.

As per NCRS this is how you can tell your date and size codes, The size code for all 1978 Corvettes spare wheels is YA. The month is stamped on one side of the stem while the day is stamped on the other side. The year is stamped in two places, one in the center hub and another near the valve stem. The stamping reads K37,K38, or K39. The K represents Kelsey- Hayes, the wheel manufacturer, the 3 identifies the manufacturing plant fot the wheel, and the 7,8,or 9 is the last digit of the calendar year.Hope this helps to further your research!!

Tom,

Just so we don't get things confused, the wheel date code, that is when the wheel was made is March 20,78 on my Vette. The actual build date on the Vette is April 11, 78.

To find out the information like VIN'S and other data on Vettes all you need to do is go to the Tools section on the C3VR.Once you are in Tools click on C3 Registry Data and do a search for what you want.

Thanks for clarifying...and I am seeking build date for car...date in which it was assembled. I've talked to pace car owners who are unfamiliar with the location and interpretation of the vehicle assembly date...I wouldn't think to ask them for the wheel date. But its a good point you raise and I'll have to keep up with the wheel date code as well to determine the "break" point.

Yes...I've used the tools who at C3CR...nice! Also, I see your up the road from me...I'm in Myrtle Beach

But thanks for sharing this information.

Thanks Tom,

We've had a lot of good times in your town(Myrtle) over the years.

The reason that I know more about the numbers of my car is if you have ever been to a NCRS judging you will know what I mean. By the time they get through with you, you will know more about your car than you will want to know.

There might be another member that could help you here at the registry. His name is 1978INDYPACECAR. He has one of the earlier Pace Cars that was made, #32 of 6502,and was made in March 1,1978.

Thanks Doug...yes, I'm quite familiar with NCRS. My 78 SA is a 32k Bowtie car and I served on the technical team that research and wrote the manual.

Yes, 78INdycar, Bill and I have corresponded and with the low mileage car he's got 2200K something, he has yet to drop the spare tire carrier...somewhat apprehensive. But your absolutely correct with a #32 build car...his car is one that could be one of those rare Pace Cars with a yellow rim. Remember...we've traced yellow rims use into Mar 2 build cars. So with a build date of Mar 01...could make for some interesting data!

Talk to him if you get a chance...I'm really curious now!
