Hi All, thought I would share this winSmile I had today trying to decrease the burning heat coming in  to the cabin.

I first diconnected the heater completly from the engine to see if there was hot water still running thru the heater core, this made little or no dfferenceCry.

Next step was to source the hot air which had to be coming in from the engine bay, the only place I could see was it had to be getting past the rubber seal on the hood.

The rubber looked like the origanal and was hard as rock and not flexible at all, the replacement rubber does not look long enough to go down the sid far enough to do any good.

I went to a local store that sells anything to do with rubber products and after market seals. I found a self adhesive foam made from EPDM rubber which is 18mm x 18mm square for AU$10.95 per metre.
I bought 3 Metres, took off the old rubber cleaned up the surface on the hood and attached the new foam. I put this all the way down both sides of the hood(the origanal only went down about one third of the way) and around the top to try and get a better seal and stop the hot air from getting out from the engine bay.

I went for a drive to see if this had made any difference and the result was amazing, the only heat was from the outside air, we had 32 deg Celcius pretty hot, there was no were near the heat that was coming in to the car beforeClap. I coould now put my bare feet up under he dash for the first time
When I came back and lifted the hood I can see were the rim from the gaurd has gone in to the foam all the way roud and down the sides giving a good seal and stopping the HOT air from escaping the engine bay and getting in to the 2 side vents.

Hope this info helps with others trying to reduce the heat, it seems to has stopped my problem.

Regards

Andy

Heh Andy good find, I did not think that would have made a difference. I was just thinkin the other day that it's your summer down under.

Now there is no excuse to get some shots of that Vette down on the beach. Find some freinds in some WW's to pose with that C3Wink

Then post up a signature page!

Can't believe I'm reading a post about heat when there is snow on the ground and I'm wondering about how to get more heat into the vehicle right now!

But a few months from now I will think about this post and wonder how I can reduce the heat inside my vehicle.

Do you have any photos that can detail what you did?

Very interesting, some pictures would be great. I have added pro-form 350 heat/noise barrier on the complete inside floor and firewall of my 76 and am in the process of doing the same on the underside in the transmission tunnel and lower firewall. Will keep working on the sound and heat barriers, love my C 3 for what she is:):):) but it is always good to look at the options. Thanks, Happy C 3ing in Australia. Eric...

Very interesting approach to solving this issue.  I've never heard of anyone doing this before, it's always been heat reflection material under the carpet for an answer (mixed results).  Good job!

Andy,
Thanks for this post. I purchased some weatherstripping off of ebay this past weekend and if it works as well as yours did I will be in heaven! The weatherstrip I bought is in a napa box so I plan on checking with them to see if it is still available and what pricing is. I put it on last night and it fit perfect. Had to push down on the hood for it to latch shut but I'm sure it will compress some. But a great seal. Saturday if its nice out I will give it a text drive. I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks, Rodney

Took the car for a drive this weekend to test the amount of heat the new weatherstripping around the hood made. It definitely made a difference but there is still alot of heat there yet. Stopped at home depot and bought the insulation that has foil on both sides and seems like some type of soft plastic or bubble wrap inside the foil. I plan on removing the carpet to install the insulation at the same time I change the trans and the console for the shift pattern change. I'll let you know how that effects the heat as well.

Hey Rod,

You may also want to consider blocking off your heater core.

I put valves that I can open & close on my heater hoses just before my heater core. Makes a big difference!

Kevin - I bought valves for each side of the heater hose but was worried that without flow going thru there will the heater core develop leaks faster than normal. I know many members dont worry about the heater cores because we dont drive them in the winter but if we fix the heat from coming into the cab in the late fall evenings my wife wont be happy without a heater!

Rod,

With the valves in place I allowed some antifreeze in to the heater core before I shut off the flow.

I believe that leaving some antifreeze in the heater core is better than leaving it dry. (I recall getting some positive feedback here at C3VR on that idea.) You still get a bit of heat but it's nothing compared to a flow of heated anti freeze circulating through the core.

There are quite a few threads on this topic here. Read up on it before you decide.

Hi,
I'm new here and just read this as i have this problem too.
I looked at my vette and can see how the heat from the engine compartment is getting into the cabin?  Is there a fresh air intake on the outside under the windshield? If so where is it?
thanks
Paul

Hi Paul..what he is referring to is the astro vent system..it can allow heat from the engine while driving to be forced inside like a hair drier on your feet..there is a thread from rod7515 from above that used a product called lizard skin..search it out..I am not sure where he got it..Summit?.. but it works on keeping the floor cool..what year car do you have..we never really mind a few pics of other cars here! Hope this helps!

Paul, The lizard skin I got came from Summit. I used it on my 74 along with the insulation from home depot that has the bubble wrap with the foil on both sides. Made a totally different car by doing it. No more heat on your feet. I just finished using the lizard skin on my 72 and plan on doing the insulation on that as well. You can get the spray on lizard skin from a few different places. I just happened to get mine from summit. You will need a spray gun just for that. Not sure where you are located but you could always borrow mine if you decide to go that way. Just let me know.

I got LOTS to learn about vettes, its my first one. I have restored 2 old 52 trucks in the past, but this is way different.

Clap  Looks purdy purtty. The old EDSEL in the back ground is a looker as well.  Don't see many of them around. I rode to school in one in the late 60s. Green and white. The dash seamed to be way down by your feet. BIG car!

My guess is it's a Edsel, i will check the next time i go there. It was a little town on RT66 called Seligman. It's main income is tourist so they have lots of old cars sitting all over town. When i pulled up there was a bus of tourist from japan getting off. They got out of the bus and ran over to my car and wanted to take lots of pictures. Gee i love my car.
