Kewl!
Rich, if those mufflers are round, be sure and hang on to them if he ever decides to replace the exhaust....those appear to be the factory muffies.

Rodney I really don't know what's wrong with me..I really enjoy working on these things..its very relaxing to me..when compared to work..it has picked up the last few weeks now and another guy left to go work a field rep job for Audi..so there is more there now than ever..I had the TA off in no time..tore it apart at work and sanded it all down..picked up the Timken bearings and seals in the way home and will set them up tonight..should have enough shims left over from mine to do it..let me know when you are ready I can set them up for you no problem..I only have to buy one tool for the front TA bushing stake..other than that I am becoming a tool guy..got almost everything I need..

Also if a moderator sees this could this be moved to suspension as I plan to continue with the rebuild ..thanks

Rich

I think he will bring it up to Carlisle..he goes anyhow right..I have a rear diff issue I found last night that is going to add some time I think..and a few more parts..got some heavy end play on the DS output shaft in the rear diff..have to figure out if I can replace the shaft or I have to go into the diff and rebuild it also..either way it will still be done in the months time..I ordered my bushing kits last night..and will do the bearing setup today..hopefully do some u joints on the PS axle tonight..he has a computer at home that rivals a brick..in terms of power..I think it was designed to be thrown thru a window..someday he may get a new one but he's got other stuff that he's doing now..we'll see..

I have his computer's mate! The only difference is that ours died the other night. Talk about good news / bad news! It'll be GREAT to get a new one but I hate paying for it! Oh well, now mine IS a brick. It sounds like you should just bite the bullet and just rebuild the whole thing! It looks like the POs dropped the ball when it came to the rear!

He did drop the ball..he had the car signed up for Carlisle auction and took it out once I pointed out the rear issue..I really thought it was just a bushing..it moved so much I really couldn't tell..it moved back and forth inside the area where all the shims were supposed to be..thing that really irritates me is the car was inpsected not more that 80 miles ago..and 40 or more of those miles would have been driving it here from storage! I know I could really make a stink about it..may think a while on how to Pursue that one!.. its a guy who had a car he really liked then parked it when he got his 03.. not really a big deal..just a little more work and this cars suspension will be new!

I guess I have to ask, what were you doin with the parts in the oven? I have never put parts in an oven. Thought about buying an oven to do some powder coating but it would be for just that! If all you got was the "look" you were lucky. Wifey here would have killed me! Oh well, Im sure you'll have a great reason! Big smile I just cant wait to hear it! Hope the rest of the day goes better for ya, do you hide parts anywhere else? Showed my wife your pic she says she'd kill me if I brought parts into the house!

Rodney that's funny..the look was the usual..I am sitting in the garage watchin tv now..hopefully she doesn't put some weird stuff in the crab cakes..she really doesn't cook much and she doesn't really cook much well but what she does cook well is pretty good..so what I am saying..she doesn't use the stove much!! Why they are in there..I used a BBQ grill paint and baked it on..got them warm to about 150 degrees then let them cool to touch..then took them in the garage and painted them..then after they dry for a day I stick them back in the stove at 200 degrees for an hour to bake the paint on completely ..then shut it off and let them cool down..works good and the paints sticks good too..can't wait to do the other side!

Rich, You should look for an old electric oven for in the garage and go to powder coating. Having painted parts in the oven you use for food cant be a good thing! But if they look good Im ok with it. And its for the vette so its all good! Cant wait to see this thing! I'll be home this coming weekend, maybe I can find some time to make a trip out to see it!

It doesn't leave any residue as far as I know..since they did dry for a day before hand..the oven burned off anything before we made diner!! I don't have any plans next weekend..except hopefully putting the diff back in!..then its spin the car around and do the front bushings..still looking good for a month rebuild!!

Rich, did you just cut your exhaust? Are you putting new on it? I decided when I do the exhaust on mine I am going to try butting the pipes together and use the wrap around clamps. That way it will be easier to remove when working on the car.

Ok at work this morning I torched off the u bolts so now the parts are separated properly..inside the diff now my side clearance are .066 and 0.69.. I really think its to much..also the one side is mushroomed over a bit..so do I replace the side yokes and call it a day or do the blue print diff that are really nice but the stock unit will do the job..the yokes are a buck a piece and the rebuild is another 300$..

Replace the yokes and build it yerself...save the $$$ for something else you KNOW the car is gonna need.
Too much yoke/center pin clearance can be from yoke wear, OR posi clutch wear. The yoke in your pic above doesn't look worn to me, but it's hard to tell from the pic, so....

Rich, I have Brute force u-joints in my half shafts. They have taken the abuse of my 406 without complaints to date. I'm happy with em. And my brother actually uses them in his drag cars. He says there every bit as strong as spicers.

Keep up the good work!!Thumbs Up

That's one of those debates that seems one doesn't beat the other..I put them in my car also..the one thing I do know is that GM put non grease style ones in from the start for a reason..I re did the u joints in the 73' s rear shaft..it had new ones in it that were grease style..they were shot..replaced a few years ago..so now all are new..should last a long time..

hey rich, how you gonna get to do the alignment once everything is back together? You do it yourself?
Ive talked to Dave here in town because he seems to know alot about them. I'll have to get mine done once I do all the replacements.

Rich,
I just gotta say thank you for taking us "along for the ride" so to speak with this suspension rebuild.
Im loving watching the progression.
Im considering re-doing my rear suspension one of these days and this is very informative.

now I just need a place and the know-how to do it :)

Jeff..I guess the hardest part was getting it apart..as it had the original u joints in it..had to torch the whole thing apart..if I would have known that it was completely rusted together I would have taken it out in one piece..its easy to post stuff with the new phone I have so its fun doing so..if you have a way of removing the arms bring em down for a bbq beer and ice cream..can be done in short time since I got all the stuff!!..maybe a 12 pack worth!!

Hey Jeff, Car looks great, what type of wheel is that. Do you know what the offset is? What size rims are they?
