Well, I am now a Corvette owner. 1978' red with oyster. The body is good, tires are nice. I had new brakes put on it. Pads, calipers, rotors and master cylinder. New exhaust. New starter. New battery. New plugs and wires. Now, on to what it needs. Windshield, (cracked), interior. ALL of the interior. Air conditioning. (had it originally, most of the system is still there.). Heater core. But for $500, it was still a steal! Pictures to follow.

Congrats on the purchase!!! Sounds like it's gonna need some TLC(and some $$$), but....don't they all? Good Luck with the restoration, and post up any questions you may have....lots of good folks here that have already been there/done that, and we're all willing to help out with info! Thumbs Up

Be sure to check the build date on the tires! If they are over 5 years old, REPLACE them. Blowouts on Vettes take fenders with them! If it was me, I'd replace the tires anyway. I just don't trust other people. Does the frame and birdcage area check out? That sounds awefully cheap for a Vette. Good luck and happy motoring!

Tires look good, am replacing them anyway. Frame looks ok, don't know what the birdcage is. Think it needs a generator, battery doesn't seem to hold a charge.

Besides the normal parts house there are a couple of individuals that restore C3's and the ones they cannot restore the part out.

I have heard of one in your area but do not have the name or exact location I will try to find out if you want.  I have on 10 minutes from my house in Lemon Grove.

The Bird Cage is the the metal frame work that contains the drivers compartment.  (basically that is it).

By the way my C3 was a lot of sun damage and I was able to save a lot of money by going with used parts where it made sense.   Hows your Dash? I believe 78 was a year that they changed and it is the same as my 82.  So if you have to replace I have lots of experience because I had to take mine in an out about three times to get it correct.  I now know what not to do and what to do.

Waiting for pictures?

Did you get a GM Shop Manual for your year yet?  You will need one.

Looks like you got the deal of the year for a C3.
Can't go wrong at that price. Thumbs Up
My day job has nothing to do with cars, so I love tinkering and working on them when I have the time. Learning a lot as I go along. And this is the best gang to be a part of when you're pulling stuff apart and starting to wonder "What the heck am I doing?" A lot of very knowledgeable people here that are more than willing to help out.
I love them 25th anniversary cars. Post some pics when you get a chance.

You will truly enjoy tinkering for years to come!! Btw, you battery drain might not have anything to do with the battery or alternator - C3s are notorious for bad grounds....

Drove from San Francisco to LA today, found a few more glitches.

Oil pressure gauge doesn't work.
Clock doesn't work.
Tach doesn't work.
Speedo works, but reads 25% faster than you are actually going.
Runs hot.  (Although, it was an oven in central Cali today.)
All weatherstripping needs replaced.
Windows misaligned.
Fuel gauge works, and seems to be accurate, but low fuel light stays on at all times.
Gen light stays on.
High beams don't work.
Horn doesn't work.
Dome light missing.
A few signal lights seem to be missing or broken.
3 rear hatches missing hinges, just laying over openings.
Visors missing.
T-Top lining missing, fasteners messed up on tops.
Strange jerky-ness in rear when in reverse.  Sometime forwards.
Every joint in front end needs replaced.
Passenger side mirror needs replaced.
Need keys for door, glove box.
Corvette logo on rear broken.

Starting a blog, will post photos there, and cross post to here.  Later!

You are in the the right city for Corvette restoration.  My best friend became J & D Corvette in Bellflower.  They have every used part for Corvettes.  They also have alot of my money.  In addition, they have new parts, do body work, paint, mechanical service and manufacture fiberglass body parts.  (800) 838-8353,  9833 Alondra Blvd., Bellflower 90706

Hey TJ,   I got my '78 last year in about that same condition, but I paid $11,500 more than what yours cost!! I am saving all the receipts for the parts and labor, but not ever gonna add them up.

There is still about half the items on your list that need attention on mine, but it starts and runs, and it's a "challenge" to work on and FUN to drive!   JT

Hi TJ,  I had the same prob with the FIRESTONE tires when I got my '78 - they looked great with deep tread but leaked air overnite. I went with GOODYEAR Eagle II and have no problems now. Hey you should submit a photo of your "new" Vette to the c3vr calendar this year:

The flat tire is a Uniroyal tiger paw. I'm going to go with the Firehawk, or the BF Goodrich. I'll do a photoshoot with the car ASAP, and get a submission sent. Hopefully my factory rims will be here today, and I can put the new tires on the new rims. Anyone need a set of clean Centerlines?

Is that a wheel spacer I see laying on da floor under the front end? Angry
That means the rims are not correct for the car....they won't clear the brake calipers without the spacers....not really a good idea to use them, imho....
But the car definitely looks like a good project!Clap

Amazingly, there is a guy over in Corvette forum dot com that got a C4 for $500 almost the same day.  If there were two, there are probably more!

I put a few more pix up on my blog, I think my mac is freaking out the site software or something, I still can't seem to get a photo to post

I'm still looking for the "glitches" in your post.  Everything sounds normal, except your crazy talk about a passenger side mirror and a glove compartment.  Next thing you know, you'll be saying you can't open your trunk!! LOL

Have fun with it.  I agree, if you paid only $500 and was able to drive it between LA and San Fran, I think you got a deal!

Joel, that is a wheel spacer, (you sure don't miss anything). I agree about never using spacers.  Nothing like adding more stress on everything.

Looking good! From what I see around the emblem, the paint looks pretty good! Everything you accomplish just sparks you to keep going!

Some of your problems may be related to fuses or shorts.
Do the investigation to find the real problem before you replace parts.
I hate electrical problems, but they can be solved.

TJ,
I agree with the concerns of the wheel spacers. But I run them on mine since I love the look of the 70's Cragar. They just wont fit without a spacer. This makes me drive a little slower out on the road and it might cause you to not be able to keep up if traveling in a caravan to an outing. (some of these guys fly) I keep a torque wrench in the car and I check them about every 100 miles or so. Never had them come loss yet but I continue to check them. Wish there was another way to get around it. If you dont have to use a spacer dont! If you do have to have one, keep your eye on them! By the way, the car looks good and I like the pick of tires!

Rod, I really don't know whose wheel spacers that you have, but there are some pretty good billet ones that are better than the cheaper ones. here is some info about them:

Trans-Dapt Performance billet wheel spacers are constructed from durable, lightweight 6061-T6 aircraft billet aluminum, making them perfect for trucks, racing, or other heavy-duty applications where you need extra clearance for your wheels. These Trans-Dapt wheel spacers include preinstalled, press-in wheel studs and feature radiused edges to reduce stress. Trans-Dapt Performance billet wheel spacers include zinc plated, open-end lug nuts.   Notice that they mention can be used even for racing...............

It will be a moot point tomorrow, as I am picking up my 78 aluminum factory wheels from the restorer.  Polished, center repainted, and clear coated.  They should look awesome, and no more spacer.

Well, put the new/vintage rims on, lost the spacers and viola! The lug nuts were the wrong size. Too long shanks, they bottomed out on the stud before they were fully tight on the wheel. So, I ordered new, vintage remake lug nuts. Since the wheel is right, I'm assuming (I know, I know!) that everything will fit. And I'm replacing the passenger side window glass tomorrow.

Those wheels and tires look REALLY good! It's too bad you're in CA, because if you were closer I'd find out where you got the wheels done to do mine! they look like new! By the way, You can  ONLY use the repo lug nuts on the cast aluminum wheels. Nobody else has the proper shoulder and depth. You CAN get McGuard locks for them, though (which I would reccomend).
You're going to have something really special when you're done! Wish I could see it!
