Finally got a chance to take my 71 for a good long cruise to test out my cluth replace and trans. rebuild. It won't stay in third gear when I let off the gas.AngryAngryAngryCensored. Talked to Master Joel about the possibilities, and after much linkage adjustment it still does it. I'm taking it to the shop that rebuilt it so they can check it out, but don't look good. CRAP!!!! I just wanna go crusin!!!!!

Other than that, in the realm of things..........life is good.Thumbs Up

Sorry to hear it, Terry...
Hope they take care of it for ya. Are you taking the car up for them to check, or just the trans? It's prolly better to let whoever did the work drive it, so they will see exactly what's goin on. If you take it out and take it to them, they might not know what to look for, specifically. Let us know what they say...

I had a similar problem and it was the linkage. The easy way is to remove the pivot from shifter and the twirl rod to adjust.

Another way to test is it's not linkage is to disconnet linkage and put car in third and then drive it that way and see if you still have this issue.

Good luck.

I did do some serious adjusting to the linkage Jack. I was thinking about doing the putting it in third with shifter unhooked and driving it. Maybe I'll try that before I bring it in. And yes Joel I am gonna bring the car in so they can drive it.
Thanks Guy's. I'll keep ya posted.

Update: I took the car in so the shop could drive it. They told me that I had to pull it back out, which I did. Only took me 1.5 hrs. this time. So they have had it since last Wed. and now they tell me they can't see anything wrong. They are bringing it to a Muncie expert to have a look. MAN, am I getting nervous!!!!!!!!!!Angry

OK so I got the tranny in for the second time. They said it was the 3rd gear synchro ring that caused it to pop out of third. Dumb a__ should have replaced that when they put in the 3rd gear. Ok so now, stays in third, but making a loud whinning grinding noise in 1st & 2nd. The dude started makin excuses. I told him, you don't even wanna go there with me. I have a very long fuse but people don't like me when I'm po'd. They have the car now, and said they would try to adjust it out................Rolling On The Floor Laughing. I said I'm no tranny x-pert however i know you ain't adjustin that out. He said it would prolly have to come back out. 2 choices I says. You pull it out and call me when its fixed, or I pull it back out and get my money back so I can take it to someone who knows how to rebuild Muncie transmissions!!
Other than that.................life is GOOD!!! CryCry LOLLOL  Wacko

As a worst case, we have a local (Minnesota) guy who is good and fast.  You could ship it here and we would run it out to him and get it back to you.

Thanks Larry. Hid sight is 20-20. A lot of things I coulda and shoulda done. These guy's came recommended by a customer of mine. But now I think its only because they're friends. A place can have a good reputation, but it only takes one bad tech to ruin it for ya.

Sorry you had troubles. That's why I shipped mine off to Joel for a rebuild. Absolutely worth the shipping cost to know it will be done right the first time.

Well here's the latest. I brought it in for the third time and left it. They said they could adjust the noise out. OK, so long story short I called to check on it and they said they had it back out. I told them I was gonna pick it up and have someone else look at it and they told me they had it all torn apart and the slider is hitting the gears because of the new shifter.Five days later they said they have it done. They put the old shifter back in and "it works fine." Then, Get this, at $70 an hour and 7 hrs. you owe $500 plus 4 hrs. $210 for adjustment, because I was the one who put in the new shifter, and it wasn't they're fault. They then found out what happens when ya hit me powder keg.AngryAngry First of all you never told me you were gonna pull it again. And second the shifter had nothing to do with it. OK here's where it gets good. I picked it up and they had a bill for me. I said I need to try it first before I give you anything. I took off and it wouldn't go into 2nd gear. Went back and they said it will go in but you have to move the shifter around a bit to get it to go. LOLLOL
I need to end this story. So,I put the new shifter in and so far its working. If they call me for their money I am just gonna say I can't talk to you anymore.

Thanks my friends for your tips and letting me vent. Especially you Joel for our phone conversation.

Well....I'm certainly glad ya got it back, and it appears to be "fixed". I still don't know how the heck the slider(s) could possibly be going too far, and contacting other gears simply due to a shifter issue. I still think it was an assembly error, or possibly the wrong parts.
It won't shift into 2nd, and they say "you have to wiggle the shifter some to get it in"??? Wow...they saw you comin!! It's a straight shot back on mine...no wigglin required.
Oh well. Win some, lose some. Glad it's back on track, Mr. Terry.

btw...I did look at the Muncie I've got torn down, and I just can't see what the heck the sliders could hit/rub on, except the gears of the cluster shaft. My bet is, they put in a 3rd gear for a BW T-10, instead of a Muncie. It will fit, but the cut of the gears are different, so that would make a noise, and yo said the noise started after the 2nd time they worked on it, and they told you they had to replace 3rd gear....which is what they should've replaced to begin with, but they didn't...Wacko
