Had the opportunity of a lifetime and wanted to share. I was invited to join Dave (OSSW1) and co. in Scottsdale, Az. for Barrett Jackson this year and always wanted to go, soooo, we did. Plane tickets arranged well in advance, we found ourselves at different airports (Dave in LA, Ca. & I in Sac, Ca.) in the worst storms of the year and even worse in Az. They threatened to stop all flights to Az. But we must have got the last ones out. We met in Phoenix and rented a car. we were very fortunate to be invited by a friend of Daves to stay with them while there (even had our own rooms, sweet) and they were great hosts. Dave had to venture back out at midnight to pickup another friend the airport and the day his brother arrived very timely from Tuscon and met us at the auction. Lots of vendors and even more cars. We spent the day until 9:00 that night  drooling over some fabulous machinery. Not like a car show though, while waiting outside to be sold the hoods were down and made great pictures, the hoods don't come up till they hit the stage. We must have had a guardian angel cause in the worst storm in 25 yrs. in Az. the rain stopped for us and we spent the whole day running around without getting wet. There are actually more cars to be sold than you can see in one day, so we did our best to get our fill. Daves brother and friends were the best of people and I couldn't have felt more comfortable. We took separate flights out the next day (successfully) and the storm resumed. I came right home and went searching for and old truck to restore. Found one. But with my budget it needs everything. Not too much rust though. ... Thanks for the good times Dave, that was great. For those of you who don't know Dave, he's a former Navy Seal and his younger brother a Police Officer, very special people, I really enjoy their company. Sorry buddy, I hope I'm not embarrassing you.

In case I left any questions about what it was like there, well, the crowd is just like any other but with a greater percentage of good looking women. They must have an emphasis on certain criteria in the hiring of their female staff members Wink. Some offsite parking but with shuttles all day and into the night. Vendors galore and even a few that have nothing to do with cars, but no matter, there is too much to see. In Scottsdale they have a small race track and for a fee, with a professional driver, will strap you in the passenger seat and try their best to scare the pee out of you. So many collectable items, it's hard to imagine. Wish I had the money to gather some goodies. One of the food vendors was the largest BBQ in the world. An entire semi truck, the trailer being the cooker of course. Ford had set up 2 Mustangs on dynos on a stage for drag racing and would select people from the crowd to "drive" the cars (no steering involvedLOL). Million dollar (and more) personal touring coaches, small airplanes (in case you're shopping for one, Cry I wish). The actual auction goes on for 5 days I understand, and the entry ticket price varies according to which day you enter ($25 to 40 I think). If you intend on bidding, you have to be pre qualified financially and pay $500 (which will allow you one friend for free) to enter the exclusive bidders area just in front of the stage or bid by phone or online. A fabulous experience, I'm glad I got the chance.

Hey Ace,
Sounds like you guys had a great trip.
I'm glad it worked out so well and that the storm didn't cramp your style.
Thanks for the rundown.
Thumbs Up

Thanks Jimmy, always wanted to go.  I always watch it on TV.  So, the big question..what did you think of the prices?  I saw some good buys and some not so good buys.  Looks like most of the cars are really extra nice commanding the premium price.  If a person was a serious buyer, do you think its worth paying the 500 and bidding?  Or better looking elsewhere?  What does everybody else think?

I see they have a new location in LA.  And I'll be watching as usual.  Love it...
The commentators are great and I always learn a few things.  And they usually point out what is undersold and oversold.

Like the ones that sell for a price that you couldn't restore it for.  Those always seem like a good deal to me.

Regarding prices.  I think there is a 10% buyers premium and a 10% sellers premium,  So BJ makes a ton of money with 20% of each sale.

Also, while watching TV... they talked about volunteers.  So I guess car guys like us are working there and helping out.  That would be a fun job, if you lived in the area.

Thanks again.Thumbs Up  So what kind of truck did you find???  Good luck on it...Steve

Actually, I don't believe there is any charge to the sellers, but you do have to pre qualify your vehicle before they'll take it in on consignment, so you pretty much only find special stuff there. That's why the prices are big sometimes. If you had the money to invest, they seem to weed out the less quality stuff, so you will find those at another auction. I believe you could arrive the day before bidding begins and check out the cars and only buy the bidding ticket ($500) if you see items of interest.
As far as my truck, I've always wanted to restore an old stepside truck, but I should've thought about that when I was working. The wife wanted to make payments on a newer used truck but I talked her into going my way. I just want something I can keep on the road without a computer to diagnose it's problems. I set my sights on most anything pre 1975 but had to settle on an '80 GMC. Pickups are fiercely popular around here and I was lucky to find one of my favorite body styles. Here's a pic of what I'm starting with. I've got 150 pics from Barrett Jackson but I don't know how to  post a picture sight address, but I'll keep trying.

Oops, I thought I made it smaller this time. Can you imagine if I were to import the whole 150 pics I took at Barrett Jackson? This is in the sellers driveway. You're right about the wheels Barry but this project will have to be as $$$$ allows. Trying to get her running 1st. Rebuilding the steering column right now.

Nice truck Jimmy. Looks in real good shape body wise.  I have a 73 GMC.  4 speed fleet side LWB.  Wish it looked like yours.  It was my Dads truck.  Only has about 24K original miles on it.   Good luck and keep us posted on how it goes.
Do you belong to a Chev/ GMC PU Forum?  I thought about joining one, but never have.

I was trying to get a '75 or older, it just didn't happen for me. I needed to get this up and running before my Nissan gives out. It only has 300,000 mi. but but electrical gremlins are at work. I did hook up with the Chevy/GMC truck forum, but haven't posted there much yet. Here's hoping they're half as good a bunch as this crew.

I just purchased a 1976 Corvette. The headlights won't go down. It seems to have been disconnected for a while. Can anyone give me suggestion on how the repair this problem?

Thanks,

Darrell
