Attendance at the Annual Gatherings has varried greatly over the 11 years we've been doing them. We move it each year in order to give people all over the US a chance to attend one that is (relatively) close to them and also to make it interesting for those that attend every year.

With a about 900 active members, I'm curious why we don't have more in attendance. I would think 10% would be a reasonalbe number to expect, yet we did not come close to that this year.

Here is a list (best as I can tell) of the numbers from all the gatherings:

2013 - Colorado Springs: 30
2012 - Charleston: 42
2011 - Effingham: 67
2010 - Bend: 41
2009 - Mystic: 23
2008 - Hot Springs: 73
2007 - Carson City: 57
2006 - Pigeon Forge: 74-110?
2005 - Bowling Green: 29
2004 - Bowling Green: 37
2003 - Hershey: 24 (+ spouces)

To help me better understand why you did not come this year, please select the reason that best describes why you did not come. This is an anonymous poll, so please be honest. (Of course, if you post a reply to this thread, it will not be anonymous.)

If you DID attend this year, obvioulsy you should not be answering this poll.

Thank you! |cheers|

Hmmm....funny thing I notice....seems like the attendance was the highest at the THREE Gatherings that I went to(PF, HS, Effy).... could there be a correlation there? Ermm
LOL Clown LOL (just kiddin!)

For ME, there were more than one reason for not making this one. Time off being the main one, of course, but the $$$$ is a big part of it too, along with other responsibilities. Lots of different things keep us from attending....but IF it were possible, we would. Some of the best fun with fellow Corvette owners I've ever had have been at the C3VR Gatherings. Hug

Similar boat as Joel. Time and $$

My vette is in a million pieces with "LS1 engine swap" going on now. Which I have to spend every moment available to complete it this summer. That project so far has put me down a few $K. Just paid my daughters 1st year high school tuition, that was another few $K. Lastly we bought a new Dodge Challenger R/T "unexpectedly" and that put a seizable dent in the coffers.

I think next year we will be in good shape to attend a gathering. The vette should be more reliable than ever and I'll have to put away a few extra bucks. The past 2 winters here have been pretty mild. That put a damper on the O.T. mad money fund.

We miss seeing everyone and meeting new members.

I wanted to come but:
My wife could not get the time off (I'm retired);
My vette is not 100% to drive that far, let alone on the drives you took.

The Gatherings look great and I hope to be able to attend in the future.

A few reasons why I could not attend this year's Gathering:

$$$ (One kid in college and another in Catholic School).
Health Issues (I have Relapsing Remitting M.S.).
My Corvette (I'm in the middle of a few projects).

At this point attending an Annual Gathering is a goal.

I would like to attend the event. Having one lung make altitude an issue with me but that is not the main reason.  Time of was some of it which is what I used on the poll but that would only be 1/3 of the reason.  Not bringing my car would be 1/4 of the reason.  Because you are trying to figure something out I'm going to answer all of your poll questions.

By the way if you asked people to rank the ones that were an issue you may be able to get a better idea. Just speaking as a analysis.

30%      1. I would have come, but did not have the vacation time available
N/A       2. I would have come, but did not have the travel funds available
0%     3. Location was not interesting to me (liked the location except for the health issue)
0%     4. Agenda was not interesting to me (Sounded like a great time lots of good effort went into it)
35%      5. I will not drive my Vette that far, and will not go if I can't drive my Vette even though I was told I didn't have to. (would like to trailer it but did not have the capability this year)
N/A        6. Other plans conflicted with the dates (weddings, car shows, etc)
25%      7. Health or other personal issues prevented travel
0%      8. These types of events are just not my thing (I would like to meet some of the people that have been so helpful to me in repairing my Vette)
N/A        9. Other reason that is not on this list (if you don't mind, please reply to specify reason)

I know that does not total up to 100% but it does include the top three reasons.  Bottom line is if my Vette was drive able (I have the gauge cluster and AC out of it) and I could have towed it. I'm sure I would have just taken the leave and made the trip.

There were a few reasons why I couldn't attend.
1. my car's not finished...I could have brought a different vehicle but to me whats the point
2. finances
3. dad in poor health ( he passed so I would have cancelled anyway)

It was actually the perfect local for me as I have relatives in Denver.

Adam, you did not have what would have been my reason. The west coast gatherings have just been too far for some one right on the east coast! So to go to Colorado Springs or the one in Bend, Oregon, I would have to have a couple of weeks, minimum, AND a lot of travel expenses. Add to that the fact that I DRIVE mine to each event just makes it more difficult in a 34  year old car just leaves the west coast out. Effingham is about as far west as I can go and that was difficult, BUT I wouldn't change a thing. Anyone that has not done a gathering should make every effort to attend one! I have met some of my dearest friends through C3VR events!
If I had unlimited funds and money, I would attend every one!

I have been a member of the C3VR for going on 7 years now. I have not attended a yearly gathering yet and probably never will. The reason for this is because of many different things, one of the main reasons is that my wife doesnt have the interest in corvettes or car activities that I do so we spend vacation time and money in other ways. Dont get me wrong in thinking I dont do vette activites though. I have been doing the Carlisle weekend now for almost 10 years, I did the Corvette America day with the group and I have gone to the Lusters picnic once. I've enjoyed each activity and really wanted to attend the alternant gathering this weekend but our vacation schedule put me at the beach. As many have said I have met many fantastic vetters since joining this group. I hope to continue to attend events that are close and I can make time for.
Adam thanks for starting such a great group. Even though I dont attend the yearly member gathering, this C3VR group has been and continues to be something I enjoy and look forward to keeping up with.

My reasons are similar to Barry's.  I know I don't have to take the car, but that's part of the fun of the gathering.  In order to do this trip properly, we would need 2 weeks & that's all the time off Frank gets.  Plus, there would be a lot of travel expenses.

Additionally, as many of you know, we have other cars & I promised frank we could attend the Modern Mopar meet this year, which was 2 weeks before this event, so it just wasn't in the cards for us this year.

So, distance, cost & time off were all factors for us.

As for Shirley and I, we would loved to attend! Colorado is one of the places we really would have wanted to see. We have cars that would make the trip, NO PROBLEM". Availability of time off from work, abundant funds to travel, and family matters dictated where we devote our time to. YES, we organized a "ALTERNATE GATHERING", and DID attend it. Funds were minimal, time was one day. A family difficulty did affect our stay, but we survived. Our son Erik is in the Military, and we will be traveling to his Graduation the end of this month. Fort Leonardwood, Missouri is his base and we are dedicated to his future. This is a fantastic group. No one person makes it survive. It is a family and we all kick in to make the time we spend together a special occasion. Considering the economy, folks sacrifice much I'm sure to get together for a day or two to visit and renew friendships, make new friends, and enjoy our old cars. THANKS to ALL who participate. East coast, West coast, and anywhere in between. It's a BIG family Adam, and we appreciate the effort to organize the site. Keep up the good work.  M-n-S

OK..1st reason is trying to get time off work, We are not allowed vacation time near and on Holidays. That being said...I could have manage a emergency leave....LOL, but real reason is that I have not had the time to finish my restore...and the parts are just waiting for me to have time!  So..work, time, and last car not finished. I do have a truck to drive and even pull the vet. , but who wants to see a not yet working...vet on a trailer...(G) Really wished I could have attended...will try for next one....for sure!

Lack of funds was seriously the big reason, though I would have loved to take the wife through the Rockies in the Vette, 1200 mi. across the desert highlands  in a vette with no A/C is a formidable task. We've made the first 2 west coast gatherings, and while Carson City was practically in our back yard, the trip up to Bend, Or. (12 hrs.) cooked me to "well done" by the time we arrived. The vettes are solid runners but traveling in the peak of the summer heat is tricky.

I had planned on attending, was booked, reserved and so forth. Unfortunately, I had some health issues that basically caused me to miss the entire month of June. My first gathering was in Hot Springs and I an thoroughly enjoy them. I have been to some places I have never been before, Hot Springs, AR, Bend OR and Charleston, SC with a really fun bunch of people. I plan to make as many of them as I can get to.

I have reasons along with not having the funds, distance, and condition of the Pacer. Should be taking it in to get it fixed today though. Maybe I'll see y'all next time we are out west.

A gathering? you had a gatheringConfused, just kidding, I have had the pleasure in attending one event at Hot Springs. Great bunch of folks and had a good time. My problem is vacation time 80% and 20% distance. Was registered to attend Mid America but the Army fixed that, man!! Retired and they still screw things up for me. I need a new jobThumbs Up.

I am kinda like Barry and Barb.
I know you dont have to take the car but that to me is the whole point. I haven't driven my car more than 30 miles in one direction since the day I bought it.  I just dont trust it.
Also, now with my GF being in South Carolina, and visits being limited, my vacation time is pretty much spoken for.

Thanks to those of you that have answered the poll and replied to the thread so far.  I hope you understand that I was NOT asking for "excuses" and I certainly was not trying to pry into anyone's personal life.  I'm just simply trying to get an idea of what is the number one reason that kept people from attending.  You all certainly didn't have to explain yourselves if you didn't want to. And certainly didn't have to share any personal details you didn't want to.

For those of you with health issues (personally, or within the family), of course I'm sorry to hear about those reasons. Obviously your health and family come before a trip with a bunch of Vette Heads.

Keep those poll answers coming. The more responses, the more accurate it becomes.

Thanks!

Pretty much same as Barry, Barb, and Jeff.
We have to be careful planning days off as Lori does not get that many days, so they are very special.
We set a few aside for special events already this year, a bucket list concert, and a special couples wedding.
Also our kids were dealt to us later in life, we still have 2 teenagers at home and if we were gone for that long we may not have a home to come back to!

I'd have to agree you were not asking nor prying. But,... and these are not "excuses." To me excuses are to cover a lie. I like the term "reasons" to clarify the truth, which I feel and probably many others did also to give you their reasons for not attending. Reasons go beyond the scope of set questions in a poll IMO. Wink

Approve A WHOLE HEARTED agreement Sarge. I replyed because I also had REASONS. Excuses come from irresponsible people. I have nothing to hide. Priorities get you farther than being two faced. Can't speak for the others who replied, but HONESTY is NOT the best policy, it's the ONLY policy.

Some people got so detailed in their reply to this thread I was worried  they thought I was bashing them for not coming.  Doing this stuff online versus in person can sometimes be hard to understand what it is I'm trying to say/do.

I'm just trying to figure out if there is a way that I can increase attendance at future gatherings. I'm hoping the "reasons" (Wink)  for not coming this year will help me figure that out.

And I only asked for a description in the "Other" choice because I may have missed a reason or two that fits many people.  But some of the descriptions fall under many of the choices I listed.  I was looking for the NUMBER ONE reason that caused someone to not attend.

Thanks!

Details get to the heart of the matter. Glossing over the facts can mislead the real reason people are responding.

I was really looking forward to Colorado, but Jury duty took priority. I hope to make one one of these days.  Sorry I missed it.

No excuses, I will make a gathering someday but every year since I have been a member (I think three) I have already been scheduled to be somewhere else. This year it was Toronto. Where will it be in 2014 so I can start planning now to be there?

Adam,

I'm a few months new membere to the C3VR and have already receivewed valuable insight from the membership and this website!!!

Gatherings always offer attendance challenges for those who would like to attend.  Distance and associated time and cost is a big one.  I support your intent and the benefits of one large annual event.  However after reading some of the reasons posted for not attending and what would be my own in the future, I'm wondering if smaller regional gatherings under the C3VR heading might allow greater participation.  Based on the members locations, a regional location might be selected.  I know this paradigm shift wouldn't be without its opportunities/challenges i.e. regional representative, agenda etc.  Just a scaled down version held regionally (regions to be defined i.e. XXX sq milles or combination of states keeping it compact) and throughout the year depending on regional weather constraints.  And for those with the time and money, they would be welcome to attend as many regions as they liked.  Scheduling these around other large competing Corvette gatherings would also be a consideration, but could be an advantage.

I'm not planning on attending this years C3VR gathering.  For a year I've been saving and planning on participating in the National Corvette Caravan, which happens only once every 5 yrs.  At 67 who knows?   I'm taking my '98 C5 back to its birthplace, so this year that is the major focus for my free time and money.  However smaller regional C3 gatherings might be a fit/consideration.

I'm just offering a thought to ponder for the future.  While one large event draws a certain number or % of  the membership, perhaps regional gatherings would in the aggregate, make attendance and participation more attainable.

Just a thought from a newbie,

God Bless,
rick

Rick,

Welcome to the Shark Tank!!!

You have very valid points and they are much appreciated.

The neat thing about C3VR is that there are "unofficial" regional events. All it requires is for someone or a group to take the initiative to pick a time, place and agenda. Then invite everyone to join in on the fun.

I have done this a couple of times for the northeast. Others have done it as well.

You just missed the 2013 Gathering. Or were you there?

I hope to meet you at the NCM Caravan. We plan to get together for dinner that Friday evening in Cave City. Watch for a new thread soon.

Dwight,

Thanks for you response and sharing the unofficial gathering.  I missed your recent annual gathering in Colorado Springs, as I only just got my first year '68 Shark in late Oct.  Interesting that I didn't hear anything about it through my local Corvette club.  Is there an out reach for these events through local corvette car clubs?  You might attract new members to C3VR.

I'll keep an eye out for these unofficial gathering that might be within my miles and $$$ limits.

As for the Corvette Caravan, all my reservations have been made.  Although I know all corvettes are welcome, I will be driving my C5 for the creature comforts and since it was born in Bowling Green.

Thanks again,
rick

I have to say even if I'm from the Stock camp, I love you red, white and blue strips.  Is that paint or a decal?

I have to say when I stray from Stock, the flag colors will be a priority!

Are you anywhere near Kingston NY?  I've been tracing the history of my '68 and it was sold in 1999 from Jim Glass Corvettes Kingston NY.  I contacted him and he went into his attic and found some of the mileage certificate and sales documents and made copies and is sending them  to me.  Nice guy.

Glad you like it. It was a custom decal. Now they sell them in all different sizes.
I'm in Upstate NY. Kingston sounds like near Long Island.

My reasons fall pretty much in the same flavor as the others mentioned here.

Time would be my primary reason...closely followed by trusting the car...and by default, lots of money to support the previously mentioned two reasons. Wink

I think most of us here pretty much need 2 to 3 weeks of time to go long distance in a car that may or may not be completly trusted. And with that being said, you have to consider what would happen if you did break down. Knowing my luck, I would break down in the middle of the night, 300 miles from anything that resembles a town, cell phone goes dead, and the nearest Chevy dealer in another 400 miles out, and they wouldn't have the part that caused you to break down in the first place. No body carries 30 to 40 year old parts anymore. LOL

For me, anything outside the State of Florida, or to even consider a trip to the west coast in the '82, is where the 'trust' factor/issue comes in. I think if I was to take such a undertaking of about 2000 miles, I would first dedicate that distance to a long time bucket list of completing the entire distance of Route 66 (Chicago - Santa Monica). Not to say that I would never do a C3 event until Route 66 is accomplished, its just my personal priority if I going to travel great distances in an old car, Route 66 would most likely get first dibs. Would I combine Route 66 and a C3 event? Of course! But read on...

Combining events...hmmmmmmmmmmm...getting that one past the wife alone is more monumental than having brain surgery while having dental implants done at the same time. She does not have the same endurance when it comes to the '82. She loves the car, but when I mention I want to go a couple of hours to a car show, she bows out. She would rather do anything distance wise in the '06. Time, distance, money, and heat all become factors with her (sometimes with me too) when the '82 is mentioned or involved with a planned or scheduled activity. And when you combine other activites in our lives such as Bike Week, Biketoberfest, events in and around Daytona/Orlando, the beach, local car and Corvette stuff, mulitple relatives/children wanting our attention, money, and vacation time...it all leaves very little time for anything else (yes, we both have Harleys). I know, simple little reasons, but yet, reasons nonetheless. Now you see how 2 or 3 weeks can be used up fairly quickly. I think I should mention at this time too...where's there vacations, so goes the money close behind...  ConfusedLOL

Just my 2 cents!
