I have a 1977 and winter is approachingCry.  I store my car in a heated garage but wanted to know the best way to winterize it.  Any special things I need to do?  Also, wanted to get some opinions on car covers, like which ones are good and should I use one.  Thanks for all of your help!  I appreciate it.

Hi Matt. Our environments are soooo different in winter,  I'm not sure my input will do you much good. I love covers. I use Noah. I've tried others but nothing will survive the west coast sun very long. Noah has been the best and does help keep the dust off. If you were storing outside, the dirt will penetrate through after time, as with all breathable covers. Might give you an edge and last quite a while if used indoors.

I don't store my Vette for the winter, it's in the garage but I use it in the winter if the weather is good & there's no salt on the roads. The cold won't hurt it.

With a heated garage I'd be working on my off season to do list.

Your car should do very well over the winter. Clean it up, wax, oil change maybe, disconnect battery add a trickle charge and you could boost the pressure in the tires. I don't have heat in my garage and that's about all I do.

I also get it out every few weeks and drive it for 30 - 45 minutes, depending on how the roads are. I find it's just better to drive them when you can - get 'em up to temp and run through the gears, brakes - etc.

Now get that list ready and enjoy that heated garage!

Depressing as it may be, I'm considering the new info r.e. winter storeage.
Lots of good ideas there!
Mine sits in an unheated detached garage under a cover.
I'm with Willis 76 on driving it a bit when weather permits.
I try to run it (on a dry day) for around 20 minutes once every ten days or so. And when the roads are dry I take it out for a short ride.
Question; Is it better for the motor to run it "under load" every now and then or will just letting it idle in the driveway accomplish the same thing?

Mine sits for probably 4 months under wraps. I don't think I have ever just gotten them out for a lil ride in the winter. (The Indy weather isn't that great!) Unless I have been working on them they just sit. I do use a trickle charger or I pull the battery. (I've done both)

For no longer than this time period 4 months they will be fine. At least in the last 20 years I have never had any ill experiences from this type storage.

I do take some storage precautions as are outlined in the links above. Heck I probally added my .02 in some of them I didn't look. I didn't have to cause I know my bro's & sistas here on this forum wouldn't leed ya a stray!

Thanks Tux.
I'll add a trickle charger this winter.

I cover mine just to keep the dust off. I leave the windows down to let everything breathe.
In a heated garage you shouldn't have a problem with condensation, but keep an eye open on the metal parts like the frame.
You might consider putting plastic under the frame to keep moisture out and catch any drips.
Differing views on tire pressure, but I just keep mine at 32.
Make sure you don't have any mice in the garage. They like to hibernate in the craziest places.

Tons of good advice here. Here's mine. I have three I keep in an attached, unheated garage. I always change oil and filter after the final warmup run to the gas station where I put in Stabil and top off the tanks. Full tanks don't allow room for condensation formation. I keep the tires at the highest recommended pressure, and move the cars forward and back over the winter every month or so keeping the tires on a different spot each time. Helps avoid flat spotting, which isn't a big concern with the newer tires, but still a concern. Wash and wax and cover with a light and breathable dust cover, leaving the windows open an inch or so. I leave the batteries in and hooked up, but each car has it's own battery tender which turns on and off as needed. Every few weeks I get in and push the brake pedal a few times, hard enough to flex the seals in the calipers. This prevents them from pulling back and leaking. I put one mothball in each tailpipe and cover each with a washcloth and rubber band - for mice. I also put a few mothballs in a mesh bag, and put a few bags around the engine compartment. I put a couple smelly dryer sheets on the floor inside. I don't start them unless I can drive them for at least a half hour, and that is seldom because even dry roads in the winter have salt dust on them - and it gets everywhere in the frame. That's about it except for saying goodnight to each every night, and wishing for an early spring. I have never had a storage problem using these methods for November - March storage. Four months is about normal for most northern states. Good luck!

Now 'ya see(???), there's one more thing I never thought of; put the mothballs in a mesh bag.
I'll go out to the garage and collect up all those motthballs and put them in a few mesh bags. BRILLIANT, I tell you.
Thanks for the input!

Oh yeah. I just remembered. If you don't have a mesh bag, just cut up some of your wife's or girlfriend's pantyhose into squares, drop a few balls into them, and tie them off. Or old socks, or whatever.  Yeah, I see what I just wrote...........don't go thereRolling%20On%20The%20Floor%20Laughing

I was just going to ask ya all for sum ideas. But I don't make as many newbe mistakes any more and went lookin for an old thread.

WaaLaa....here it is.

But I'm havin a hard time keeping the moth balls from fallin out of the fishnetsLOL

I always heard it was not good to be starting them up just to warm them as it causes to much condensation. Moth ball in the tailpipe great idea. I had an old jeep plow rat and threw some old cornstalks in the back after halloween....could not figure out how popcorn was coming out the exhaustRolling%20On%20The%20Floor%20Laughing

Everyone has tips and tricks they do to minimize problems with spring strart-up. I think it is good to get that old oil out and fresh oil in when you put her to sleep for the winter nap. Then you are good to go in the spring.

I even know anal guys that will change that oil out again in the spring, just to be sure. But that is too much for me.

I will take her out for a ride in the winter if the roads are dry. But far enough to get everything warmed up good.

Yeah Kewl. Glad to see the old posts dredged up for winter storage tips. I'm almost getting ready, but hope to put it off for a couple more months. The cold doesn't matter, but as soon as we get a good freeze on the roads and they spread salt, it's all over. We have club "Drive and Dine's" up through early November, tho sometimes we have to take the steel bodies (ug).  It's been forever since I've been around or posted anything, so HI to all of you - and again those I ran across (not literally) in PA a couple years ago.

I went to a carpet store a few years back and got 4 sample pads (about 18" x 12") for free.  I position those on the garage floor so when I pull in that last time, the tires sit on them for a little cushion.  I do also try to find a sheet of plastic large enough to go underneath as well as dome dryer sheets here and there.

I try to fill the tank and add enough Stabill.  I've gone different paths with changing the oil - before, after, etc...  I leave the windows down and the top up.  I have used some of the bags of silca inside and underneath the car.  Last winter, we did end up with mice in the garage and the house, but I never saw any evidence of them in or around the Vette.  The little "peanut butter" poison traps in the garage seemed to help too.

I have been known to take the car out in late December or early January if the weather is nice, and especially if it's gotten warm enough to have some rain to wash the salt off the roads.

I've never disconnected the battery (although I did buy a quick disconnect doohicky from MAM and intend to install it) and have never had an issue.  What's the down side to leaving the battery hooked up?  It's not like there's any power drain when the car's not being run - remember, I've got a C3 - the clock doesn't work!!Rolling%20On%20The%20Floor%20Laughing

One more thing I'm going to do this year is to put a hold on my insurance.  My State Farm rep reccommended that to me to save some $ over the winter.  They will keep neccessary coverage in case of fire or other damage since the home and other cars are covered with them.  They noted that if I do decide to take it out even for a day, just call them and they'll take care of things.
