Vette(s): Used to own a 1979 Corvette now owned by JB79
After posting yesterday's blog about C3 Corvette Color Production Counts, I got some feedback that my grouping of colors was a bit off. So, I submit to you this "Version 2" to hopefully reflect a better grouping.

|UPDATED|8/9/2012 7:41:48 AM (AZT)|/UPDATED|
Changes I Made in Version 2:
I grouped Silver and Gray together as "Gray" instead of separate color groups.
I grouped Warbonnet Yellow together with "Gold."
And lastly I grouped Bronze in with "Brown."
Results of the changes:
It turns out that All Corvettes are not Red.... or White.... They're Gray!

Obviously, this can still be left open to debate as to whether or not my groupings are correct. But this should give still give you a good idea as to just how the popularity ran over the 3rd Generation Corvette.
Numbers were taken from the available statistics for the model years 1968-1982. Some years did not have any numbers available, and some have a few numbers missing.
Totals:
Color Category | Production Count |
Gray | 69,131 |
White | 64,516 |
Blue | 55,653 |
Red | 48,819 |
Black | 36,135 |
Tan | 31,492 |
Yellow | 20,846 |
Green | 20,120 |
Orange | 18,275 |
Brown | 16,597 |
Maroon | 14,472 |
Gold | 6,904 |
Black/Silver | 6,502 |
Blue/Silver | 1,667 |
Maroon/Silver | 1,301 |
Gray/Silver | 1,239 |

You mentioned the fact that the numbers are not available for some years....that's true....in fact, quite a few year models don't have production numbers available for paint colors. '68-'69 for instance. That sure makes doing an accurate count impossible, for a lot of things. Still, with the available info, it's neat to see the trend.
Oh....Where did you group the ONE Chartreuse '77?

OK Adam. While your still in research mode I would like to see one more survey please. How many C3 owners repainted their Vette RED because they didn't like the original color? Then we would know what the most popular color is today as opposed to when the car was produced.
Ya think??

I don't care which Adam's charts you use, BLUE still is more popular than red.
So, just proves that real Corvettes are NOT all red, but are BLUE.
Told ya so!!

No, I still don't have a red car... my C6 is actually Daytona Sunset Orange, so there!!! Anyway, I'd think you would agree as the picture of your Vette looks like its BLUE also.

I have to admit, I think the original grouping was a little better. Silver and gray are two distinctly different colors. I should know, I have a silver '76, but I'd rather have a "Steel Cities Gray" from the early 70's. I love that color on sharks. We have a similar color on our Odyssey, but it's just not quite the same.
BTW, when I bought my car it was painted light BLUE (go figure, with a red interior). When I had it painted, I had the shop go with the original color (SILVER) matched to the GM spec with the paint code tag on the driver's side door jamb. And my car has never been red and never will be while I own it. But I do like my red interior.
