While I was at the shop with my work car the other day a guy came in with his wife's 1999 Corvette.  Beautiful car of course.  He said if he was in the market now for a C5, he would go for a Fixed Roof Coupe.  I had never heard of one before and so looking for pics I found this one.  If my wife would let me this is what she would get to replace her aging 2001 Camry.

I really like the look of this body styleThumbs%20Up and understand from talking to the guy that these were very limited in production.  So they will probably be worth more in the long run than the standard body style.

Does anyone on the forum have a FRC?   What has anyone heard about these?

There's a couple of people in the Lone Star Corvette Club that have the fixed roof vette, and they both are black.  They were cheaper than the regular coupe and the convertibles.  It is possible that could climb to a higher value with time.Wink  Who knows!LOL

Now I've heard that you have to special order a 6 speed.....but this is just hear-say.  So......does that mean the six speed will be more valuable in the future??  Huuummmm......Big%20smile

I Think it looks sharp. I like the idea of a fixed roof. No possibilities of leaks. My sunroof on my 02 cavalier leaked ffrom the factory. My tops on the vette also leak so I personally would like a fixed roof.

The FRC was originally conceived as an entry level, no frills, "Billy Bob" Corvette...light weight and quick. In theory, it was great, but once the bean-counters/designers got done, it was FAR from what was originally intended, and hopelessly overweight. Too many options were added back in, bringing the weight back up close to what the normal coupe weighed.
The hardtop body DID make the car stiffer, which helps. It also is what made the C5 ZO6 possible.

I happen to prefer the looks of the hardtop more than any other body style of the C5s.

I wouldn't buy one as an investment car. They do have a caukier look with the roof design IMO. They also make for great modified hardtops for roadsters when cut away.

I guess in review it is nice to have basically 4 versions of the C5 to choose from when it comes down to it. The FRC, standard coupe, roadster, and the Z06.

All are nice cars in their own category and all would look fine sitting in your garage or driveway next to your C3..... Kinda like this scene!

Roger

I bought my 2000 FRC 4 years ago and love it.  As Joel said is was just under $600 cheaper than the coupe.  BUT, it came standard with the 3:42 performance rear end, the Z51 handling package and the MN6 (6-speed).  Mine has a few other options, including HUD.  There were only 2090 FRCs made in 2000, and over 4000 in 1999.

I don't know whether they'll be worth more because of limited production, but I'm sure happy with mine.

I like the FRC body style and the car gets great gas mileage 19/30.  You can take a look at a few photos here.  The pictures are 2 years old, but the car is no different.

Thanks for the insight into the FRC everyone.

Biff...NICE FRCThumbs%20Up!!! Too bad you don't live close by or I would come over and take a look at it. Thanks for posting the pics.

Micki, yea I would like to buy a black one like Biff's.  Unfortunately it is a long shot as my wife needs a new car but she wants a Toyota Camry (Boring but economical and reliable). I'd say maybe if you gave her a ride in yours then she might change her mind...but then again probably notUnhappy.

Hey Roger here is a list of FRC's for sale....

Click on SEARCH THIS FORUM and then type in FRC into the drop down box.

Once this comes up if you look towards the center of the page there is a drop down box with the word relevance in it.

Click on the down arrow and chose post date.

From there you can take your pick Black white.....even RED (man that last one was hard to say).

Good luck on your search!

Here is a bit of insite.  When the came up with them the concept was similar to a Club Racer.  A less expensive car that someone could run on the track on weekends.  That is why they have the performance goodies, and less options for less weight.  Not a lot of them produced.  I'm just guessing, but I think that some day these will be sought after cars.

Well, this is one of those "wish list" future items.  Like I said the wife would probably never go for it for a replacement for her carCry.  It would probably only happen someday when the stars are are all aligned just right and at the same time that my everyday driver needs to be replaced.Ermm  Too bad I am not independently wealthy.  Just lucky right now to have the '72.  I am counting my blessings for thatThumbs%20Up.

Thanks Larry for the searching tip for Corvette Forum!

QWell I looked for almost a solid year for a FRC....actually my kind of car...all muscle with few options and the standard Z51 Suspension and 6 speed were actually "my" only absolute needs...   BUT I sure do not think ANY C5 is ever going to become a collector car and the FRC is now viewed as a lower powered Z06 ...  nothing wrong with that IMHO..

Personally I believe that the FRC suffer greatly becasue it was originally conceived as an enty level Corevtte short on options that could be added (available only with a black interior) and only a few selected colors, the Billy Bob "CHEAP" handle stuck... The original buyers were guys like me who had no need for fancy
option packages and just wanted a car that went...well went fast, and handled ...The susposed to be weight savings just never materialized... GM woke up about selling about 6000 of them and stuck a more powerful engine under the hood and the Z06 was born and we all lnow how that turned out...

Yep I LOVE the FRC...but since I could not find one,
and since I do not like the rear glass in the coupe I had to settle for a convertible...but I got my Z51 suspension and I got my 6 speed tranny...I just gained a few pounds and have a cloth top... PLUS a lot of extra options that I really do not use... Can't remember the last time I ever turned the Radio on...A/C is only used when the wife is with me... about the only thing I use is the CD player...

Just the opinion of a guy who loves Corevttes... and owns a few...

Bob G

You could get the FRC in 99 and 2000.  Beginning 2001, they all became Z06s.
