I stil have not gotten up the courage to drill two holes in my passenger door. I'm not convinced the "well nuts" will hold the mirror securely. I know this is what the dealer
used back in 1974, however this seems like a bad idea.  I don't see a way to get to the
outer skin from the inside without cutting some of the inner door panel away. Has anyone heard or seen of another way to attach this mirror, short of cutting apart the entire door????  Could there be a well nut that works like an expandable drywall fastener to secure the mirror support from the inside?
Thanks again guys
J

The factory well-nuts I got with my passenger side mirror do compress up behind the inside surface of the door skin. Well-nuts evenly distributes the stress to prevent cracking of the fiberglass. Never had any problem in the 45 years that they've been on there. FWIW, Chevrolet uses well-nuts to attached the luggage rack on Tahoes to the roof.

I bought the US made GM restoration mirrors and the well nuts work just fine.  No good way to do it any different.

I added a passenger side mirror which used the well nuts.  No problems.  I was able to remove these when I painted the car and they went back together just fine.
