I wanted the NOS tail light lens instead of the gm reproduction or other reproductions.
After much research I found the new tail lights NOS still in the pkgs. A costly venture at $400.00, for what might have been $150.00 worth of lens several years ago. Not everything on my 68 is original, but I remember when I was younger and wanting to know the year of the car I was looking at, I could always go to the tail lights and read the year. I don't think the reproductions provide for this. Just for my own Sanity or Insanity could I have found these cheaper?

Bit of info on dating the lenses...the date you see is the date the design went into production...NOT the date of the actual manufacture of the lens. If the same lens/light assembly was used for several years, all of them will have the same date. If there was a small/large change in the lens, then the date would reflect the year the change went into effect. For instance, the side marker light lenses on a '77 might be dated '73. since the actual lens did not change from '73 to '77.
I ain't 100% certain, but aren't the outer lenses the same on the '68 and '69 cars?

Either way...the repro lenses DO have the dates on them...at least all of the ones I've seen have.

All of the lens are the same for a 68, the 69 I believe the outer ones are different.
How would you know a reproduction over a NOS, if they have the same letters and numbers on them?????. If you had an original 68 and wanted all original parts then reproduction would not do.

The '69 had the (optional?)back-up lamps in the inner light position, but, as far as I know, the outer lenses were the same. Again, I ain't no early car expert, but I believe this to be true.
How can you tell a repro from NOS/original? Hard to say....a good repro will be exactly like the original in every way. I bought the first set of '74 repro tailights that Trim Parts sold. I looked them over extensively, and found absolutely no difference in them(except they weren't cracked/busted!lol)...all of the numbers were there in the correct font/location, they have the correct look, stainless trim, etc., and they have always passed NCRS judging. If you can find some NOS, or good originals, that are affordable, that's the way I would go, but...if you can't a good quality repro is the next best thing, imho. Thumbs Up

'68-'69 tailight lens(outer)

btw...I did locate a set of NOS tailights for my '74, in the boxes. They were already starting to craze a little. I'm askeered to even touch them much anymore....I'm afeered they're gonna fall apart! LOL
