That is exactly what I did on my 76. I ran the wires through the threaded hole in back panel (the screw that holds the center console was not installed - so convenient). I had to drill a hole in the center box and through to the battery box, but you might be able to thread it over directly. I also anchored the circuit breaker under the console with a sheet screw.
It was a long process getting the vintage air system installed (getting the old AC system out was a big part of that), but it works very well. I am still chasing down a small battery drain (unable to trace to any of the fused circuits). It only drains the battery if I let the car sit 2-3 weeks, so i just keep a tender on it for now (also not sure if installing the VA system created it or just increased it a bit). Anyway...I am not looking backwards with any regrets. That car was unbearable to drive at any ambient temperature above about 80 deg F without supplemental cooling of some kind (even with the tops off).
