A close buddy is considering buying a '66 327/350 coupe...numbers matching in excellent condition.  The car was mechanically rebuilt by another friend...powder coated the control arms, Hurst shifter, etc.  I know how meticulous the owner is and the engine, trans, suspension all the way back is done right.  Outside of the Hurst, about the only other non-correct and non-original thing is the sidepipes...the car is beautiful and a real screamer, with paper trail history back to 1970.  I think the seller is asking about $5-7k less than market but that's his choice.  He owns two gorgeous red '66 coupes and doesn't want two.  He wants to sell one and move on to another project.

Since the '66 is essentially the same drivetrain-wise as a C3, my friend is thinking (if he buys it), of changing the rear axle ratio to one that won't turn so many rpm's.  I don't know the present rear axle ratio.

Does anyone have a ballpark figure such a change might be?  I would guess that means changing out the complete guts of the rear end and I assume it has positrac.

Any ideas will be much appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Vette(s): 1972 conv, 4-speed, 350, 200hp, numbers match, rally wheels, war bonnett yellow w/white top. good condition, nice driver.
Re-build or buy a re-build, not much difference.  3.08/3.38 will be approx 1K where I live. Priced a couple different places.  Shipping will get you if you order it at a catolog, unless you go get it.  Mark

You can get just the ring and pinion, i did so in dad's car(the 76) from a 3.08 to a 3.70.  That was a while back, got the ring and pinion from Richmond Gear(you can go to their site for more info but they dont have prices listed, have to contact them  http://www.richmondgear.com/01corvette.html ), and i believe the cost was around $300.... set-up was just like a standard rear chunk, spacing the carrier for the backlash and such...but you will need to know the gear ratio of your chunk, as you cannot just put any gear into it, as the carrier won't be able to be adjusted(shimmed) for certain gear/carrier combonations... however, finding a complete differential would be much much easier... here is a link to Summit Racing(sorry, not trying to knock any of our sponsers), you are looking at ring/pinions for a 1.625 inch diameter pinion and 8.5 inch diameter ring... they have 9 listed...  from $219 to $285.

Assuming the rear is in good shape and doesnt need any clutches or bearings. $300 for parts is what you have and that includes oil. If you cant set it up yourself add about $250. If other parts are questionable it just goes up from there.
