Now that all of the NCRS Judging is done for a while, I decided to preserve all of that good original stuff and do some small upgrades for summer drive ability. A good friend of mine has a '67 RS Camaro with a Pertronix ignition module in it and swears by the improvement it made vs. the stock points distributor, so I decided to give it a try. Part number 1181 for Delco 8 cylinder engines, it installs very easily without any modifications that cannot be undone to return to original. The toughest part is routing the necessary two wires to the coil and setting the gap between the magnetic sensor ring mounted to the underside of the mechanical advance unit and the modual itself fastened to the existing base plate. Once installed, reset the timing, no point gap or dwell to worry about and go !! Overall it's a great option for $85 and I have to admit what seems to be a smoother idle and better response at higher RPM's. Use your existing distributor, cap and coil. No unsightly red boxes or other ignition moduals to mount. The only noticeable hint is the additional red wire coming out of the distributor hooked up to the + side of the coil. Great option for pre '74 non HEI Corvettes. Anybody else have any experience with this conversion, good, bad or otherwise ??

I put an MSD distributor and spark box in my LT-1 and I think it runs better.

I put the pertronix unit in my 72'. LOVE it! Starts first time, every time. VERY nice, and dependable. Never know it from original. nothing to see, only enjoy the enhanced performance and untouched ignition. I would recomend it to any pre-HEI set-up. I'm not into the NCRS show type, but still want it to LOOK original.

A lot of the "NCRS type" folks use the Pertronics set-up. It works well, from what I've heard, and unless being Judged, it's not that noticeably different(looks-wise) from stock.

Hello All,If I may put my 2 cents in on the subject of Petronix Igniter I II III, systems as I have used and continue to recommend use of these ignition systems and have nothing but success in converting to either one of these system. The key is matching Igniter with correct coil.Like the systems I II III there are 3 coils: Standard 2.5-3 ohms (Igniter 1),1.0-1.5ohms(Igniter 2) and the best in my opinion is .32 ohms for Igniter 3..Each of the Igniters require for their specific performance.

Igniter I    for everyday driver,
Igniter II for use in street performance up to and including 300 hp+
Igniter II which is a HEI module type Like Chevy Distributor and
very convenient easy to install etc. and good for over 400 hp,my personal favorite, albeit I have an Igniter II in my '68 Camaro and have been using since 1997 without a hiccup.I have over the years had the privilege in speaking and working with the TECH dept.at Pertronix and have the most confidence in their products/personnel.This is not a commercial for their products but a statement of facts.I strongly recommend the Igniter ignition system.
Have a great day to all.           Sal C          nosal1

Hmmm. I am wondering if this might be a solution to the issue I had with my just acquired 68 C3.  I just took possession of a Lemans blue 1968 Corvette. It was purchased out of LA and transported to the Seattle area. Its in good shape, but does need a few things and I discovered the "overheating starter solenoid" problem on day one.  The car recently had ceramic coated headers installed and here is no heat shield between the headers and the starter solenoid. So I drove it 8 miles from where it was delivered to my house. Turn the car off in the driveway and attempted to restart it and....nothing at the key. Did some research...saw this was a common problem. Let it cool down....and it restarted. ON another forum folks talked about this approach:

Thoughts?

Danbo, I have the setup you have listed by Mad electric on my '80 Vette/ '72 Chevy Truck and is a blessing, however it will not solve or resolve a solenoid failure..I still think it will help as one reason the solenoid heats up is there is 12 volts going to it while it runs and keeps it warm due to voltage being applied. The line from starter to solenoid is cold at all times while engine is running with this system and only gets current when trying to start. You have to be very careful to have a great GROUND on the solenoid to a great ground on the block or frame. Good luck as it a wiring nightmare due to the location of Vette battery.Have a great day.               Sal C         nosal1
