Hi..I need some help on deciding and it is kind of urgent. The guy is selling an engine and a tranny (rebuilt 5k ago). This engine and tranny came out of 1975 corvette engine that was on a wreck though. he assured me that the engine was not damage. per the seller, it has 85k in the odometer. Here is the description: I got block id and it turns out to be a 1995-2000 5.7 vortec 4 bolt, zz-4 roller cam, one pc rear main seal and puts out 330 hp, # on block is 10243880, the aluminum heads casting # 10088113 are corvette high output, comb chamber vol 58cc, intake valve dia 1.94, exh 1.50 d port , angled plugs, heavy duty springs and the weigh 19 lbs versus 40 for cast, that includes the aluminum dual plane(vortec)intake manifold, distributor and carburator. Do you think will fit in my 1974? How about hood clearance? Headers? He is selling it to me for 1400. Let me know.

Any small block Chevy will bolt in. The question is whether or not the engine has mounting holes for the accessories(alt, A/C compressor, etc). The issue of hood clearance may be a problem, but many here have used the ZZ4 engine with a combo of air cleaners that fit fine. The real problem is the "D" port heads...that's gunna limit the number of headers that are available for the engine AND Corvette combo.
The one-piece rear main also requires a different flywheel than the older two-piece seal crank.
The swap can certainly be done, but it will not be a straight forward "bolt in and go" deal....there will be some cussin, and head scratching involved.

1400 is a steal . It is not a vortec engine it is more related to a L98 .. ZZ4 is a 355hp crate motor will bolt in like a glove , headers go from 199.00 and up (D-port) Flywheel if it is in an auto car will work so get it with the motor.

There will be no clearance issues the ZZ4 intake is short . So as long as it does run well I would scoop it up and plan on little if anything causing any conflicts.

Hi, Thank you for responding. Do you think, even it is used engine, it is worth spending that much $$. The pictures looks pretty clean. He did mentioned an oil pan leak, which is pretty easy to fix. He also mentioned, the flyweek or flex plate is included with the engine and tranny. The tranny is TH350, I am assuming it is only 3 speed which will work fine with my car. I am concern about the headers that will fit to the heads...I guess that will be later.

If your car is an automatic, you have a 400 trans. I would keep that, and sell the 350 trans to help recover some of the cost. The engine will bolt up to the 400 just as the engine you have in it now. Just make sure the flywheel has the correct bolt pattern for the 400 torque converter, as the converter on a 400 uses a larger diameter bolt pattern. MOST all GM flywheels have a dual bolt pattern to accommodate the different converters, but check to make sure.

IF the engine is what the guy says it is, and it runs nice, then the price is reasonable....too bad you can't hear it run first, tho.

Hi, I thought 1974 corvette or my car, only have TH350. I have 3 speeds.. If the flywheel does not bolt on, I can buy a fly wheel or flex plate somewhere else right? I wish I can hear it run first... that will be nice. On headers question, do you think, side pipes will work for this kind of heads?

The 350 didn't go into service on the Corvette until '78-'79, so your car originally had the 400 trans. Not to say that someone hasn't changed it to a 350 sometime in the past, but it would have come from the factory with the 400. Thumbs Up

Can't say about what headers you would need, but sidepipes are cool. I'm sure one or more of the major header manufacturers would have the correct combo you need....just need to do a little research, and see what's available.

You can use side pipes I think there is a set for under 800 .. search this site for it or digital corvette one of them have the link . If you want headers go to jegs and search d port headers or call them , basic painted headers are about 200 or 250 with the d port .

1975 was the last year for the THM400 in a base L48 when optioned with the automatic. From 1976 to 1980, all L48's used the THM350 when optioned with the automatic. The L82 was still available with the THM400 in 1976 and 1977. From 1978 on it only got the THM350 as an option.  The 1981 also came only with the THM350 when an automatic was ordered, but the L82 and L48 were gone. The only engine available that year was the new L81. And then in 1982, the new THM700R4 was introduced with the new L83 motor.

BY golly yer right. Dint think aboot the different engine options. I know the '74 all had the 400.Thumbs Up

I remember pulling the trans on a friend's '76 about a hunnert years ago, and it had a 400....and a fully welded exhaust. Couldn't get the crossmember to move far enough to get the trans out properly. Wound up having to remove the dang flywheel to get it out....Angry
