They can be brittle when they get years on them. I use a hair dryer or other heat source to soften it up and work it out slowly with a dull screwdriver being careful not to tear it. If it is old and brittle it's probably not creating an efficient seal anyway and should be replaced. Most of the sites sponsors have them. Sort of a victory though when you can use the old parts though..

+1 Reproduction grommets may or may not fit very snug, either....just depends on who made them. The ones I got for the '74 years ago were(and still are) loose as heck, even with the PCV valve and tube inserted. You can get some from Mr. Gasket, etc. that are kinda universal that fit tight, but they don't look "correct".
