I have a 1979 project car with a non-original engine (a 350 block manufactured in Canada with a Vortec intake). The carb is an original QuadraJet that is specked to a 350 L48 intake.

Problem, will this work with the L48 carb attached to a Vortec intake?

Thanks in advance for you answers...

If your intake will accept the Quadrajet(spreadbore) bolt pattern, it will work.

Questions:
1) I can buy either the L48 or the L48 kit .Does it make sense to buy the 195HP option?

2) Am I sacrificing performance?

3) If so, what other options do I have, given the restrictions in CA?

Again, many thanks!

Not sure I understand your questions, but....I still say that if your current carb will bolt up to whatever intake you get, then your current carb will work just fine on the engine. As long as the carb is in good working condition, you should not have any performance issues. The Quadrajet doesn't really have very many variations, from year to year on these cars. Swapping the carb from an L-82 onto an L-48 wont be any better than the original L-48 carb, in other words. Nor would using a carb off an L-48 on an L-82 give any decrease in performance, all things being equal otherwise. Thumbs Up

Joel,

Thanks for your comprehensive response (5 stars!) One of many reasons that I asked is that the original carb was for a L48 motor. Since then the original motor was replaced (not by me) with the current one in place.
Visiting Ecklers, they have 2 maintenance kits for the card, one 'designed' for the L48, the other for the L82......same price; Which caused the question in the first place.
I'll order the kit for thL48 based on your response.

Watch for my next question!

thanks again,

JC

Most auto parts stores carry Q-jet rebuild kits (save shipping and probably cheaper than Eklers).  I found that Standard brand works well.
