I am going to be installing a true dual exhaust system on my 79 and have a question about the bracket that mounts at the tail of the tranny area that the exhaust pipes clamp to before they cross through the frame. I have looked at pictures on-line of the cars that have true duals but I'm a bit confused on where exactly the darn bracket mounts. Do I have to unbolt the trans mount and jack it up and slip the bracket in between the trans and the mount surface or does it go on top of the whole assembly? I just have not seen a clear enough picture to know for sure exactly where it should be attached. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide.

The bracket will go between the top of the mount, and the trans tailhousing. You will need to un-bolt the mount from the trans, jack the trans up, remove the mount, then slide the bracket up there, replace the mount, and bolt everything back up.

That's an interesting question Keith. Cars as old as ours have almost certainly had the exhaust changed out since new. I have 3 setups similar to yours (duals going through the cross member) and they're all different. One setup with long tube headers, the pipes leave the collector, go through the cross member, and are not supported til they get to the large cross frame piece. Another muffler guy designed shaped rods that he welded on the pipes just after the cross member and they slip through rubber grommets resting in holders on the back side of the cross member. The 3rd setup is as you discribed, so I can see your frustration. This is a '75 I got recently and it hasn't been out on the road yet, maybe a good thing. After close inspection I see they're are no bolts in the trans mount 'cause some bubba couldn't get the hole to align correctly. So it seems your system may have been designed to fit that way but with some re-engineering you can do almost anything. Great looking vette. Please keep us posted on the outcome.

Thanks guys! Believe it or not my car only has 8k miles on it and is all original underneath. No exhaust work has ever been done and even the mufflers have the original build date on them. I'm using the original GM bracket for true dual exhaust, that cat has to go, so now I just have to jack that tranny and I will be good to go. Thanks for the help.

Be prepared to utter a few unsavory words in the process...it's not gonna just zap itself up in there...you'll have to fanagle it quite a bit. At least your's isn't a 4 peed....Censored

It is a 4-speed but I do have the linkage off right now because I am rebuilding the shifter. I hope you will tell me that will give me enough clearance to get the trans jacked up for the bracket install...........Ermm

Embarrassed yeah...your screen name should have given that away, eh? LOL

It will go in there, but just don't expect it to slide right in. You will have to twist/turn/tilt it every which way....and then realize it's backwards or something...LOL
Does your car have exhaust on it now, or will you have it all off before putting the bracket on? That will definitely make a difference.

I usually have the cross member lowered on one side, dropping the tranny down to get the shifter off, so it musta been tricky . There might be an easier way ?

The stock exhaust has been removed from the car so I think I will at least have a fighting chance. Sure wish I had a lift in my garage. I'm getting too old to be working on a car up on jackstands! Oh, to be young again!Ouch
Thanks for the input guys!

Just installed a MidAmerica chambered dual exhaust on my 79 and love the sound and power.  Used a "dual exhaust" mounting kit that they offer. I may get a second one, as it is just designed to support the pipes right at the dual hole crossmember (tranny) and there is no additional support until you get to the tail pipe.  I am thinking I will add a set of mounts at the crossmember ahead of the diff.  In any case, the dual mount kit was pretty cheap and it works.

Great looking car, love the color scheme of red/gray (I went to Ohio State) and best of luck on your project.

I don't have a lift in my garage either, am too old to lay under these things, so here is what I did as an interim solution (until my wife buys me a lift Smile). Harbor Freight sells a long frame jack that will lift a car about 3 ft, and a set of heavy 12 T jackstands that have a working height of about 3 feet. Although not a lift, it lets me sit under the car and work much more comfortably than with the usual mess.  The jackstands  are about 75 bucks a pair and the jack is about 150 - but well worth the investment if you don't like laying on your back while working.

Thanks for the tip. I will check out the Harbor Freight offerings. I have the same Mid America chambered system that I will be installing and I agree that it's quite a reach from the trans back to the rear mounts for those pipes to be unsupported but at least there are no heavy mufflers that need support. I can't wait to hear what it will sound like. It has to be better than that restrictive 32 year old cat. Please let me know what you come up with if you do add any other mounts to your system. You guys are awesome!
