i am looking for a new exhaustsystem for my L82 1978 corvette...the thing is should i really go for 2.5" diameter or can it also be a 2.25" diameter pipe.

currently i have a combination of several sizes welded together from what i could see and measure.
just after te header collector i have some 2.25" (or maybe even less) pipe.. then some 2.5" i think with really ugly bending so  to my idea it  restrict flow and just before the muffler also 2.25" (or maybe even less ) pipe.

so to my idea at the moment i actually have more an airflow based on a 2.25 system due to the several restrictions  in my pipe system ?

since i don have any shops nearby that can install an exhaustsystem i have to do it myself with a bolt on system

why i might want a 2.25 " pipe diameter is because i saw  on summit an exhaust bolt on system that fits my 78 :
hooker competition but it is only available with 2.25 pipe

the pipe bending looks really smooth with no restrictions anywhere

and that in combination with hooker competition headers:

for mufflers i want to go for dynomax super turbos

ofcourse i have done some research already and i think that mostly recommended will be a 2.5"diameter

for that i found this system:

but... this setup comes with magnaflow or a standard muffler while i prefer the dynomax
further on the pic the bending of the pipes suggest that there are several restrictions so that the airflow won't be 2.5" all over the pipes length?

any suggestions /experience with these systems or other bolt on systems?

thank you

arthur

Years ago I put a new exhaust system on "The Toy" from Corvette Central.  Kept the original rams horn manifolds but went with the 2.5" pipes that had a built in reducer.  The odd thing about it that I never understood was the inlet side of the mufflers was 2.5" but the outlet side was just 2" so the chrome bezels would fit.  At the time I looked everywhere to find 2.5" bezels but could't find any.  It just seemed strange to me to open up the pipe size after the manifolds but then to reduce it exiting the mufflers.  It was a total bolt on system that I installed with the car up on jack stands and me on a creeper.

+1 on the L82 system from Corvette Central. I ordered the system with the welded on mufflers which were correct for my car. The system fit great and sounds perfect. Good luck and let us know which system you go with.

I bought a Magnaflow system #16842 that had turn down tips off the mufflers for my 73. Fit nice but I modified it to fit the rear exhaust openings.

We have a local muffler shop in the Cocoa Beach area. If there was a Rembrandt of mufflers, then Matt and Gerry are those guys. They have rebuild both sets of exhaust on my '82 and the '77. After dumping the converters, they used 2.5 inch pipes from the headers, all the way back to welding chrome tips at the end of the FlowMasters on the '82 and DynaMax on the '77. Matt and Gerry have done this so long for gear heads (since Florida has no inspections), that either guy can install your system to damn near a factory look and these guys can eye-ball the installation (without using a ruler)! There are other details about how the '82 works without the O2 sensor, but that's another story. Both systems installed on my car did not go over $500 each. So, if you're a snowbird to Florida, and you bring your C3 with you, and are entertaining an exhaust change, then take your Vette to my favorite exhaust artist! Approve
