OuchOuch Well! It's gettin worse here in N.E. Pa. $3.59, reg  $3.89 for 92 octane. If I prop the Rag Top up when I travel, can I get a few wind currents to push me along?Confused

Has anyone used the E-10 remover the parts stores are sellin? If it gets to E-15, what'll it do to old engines?  I am aware that carb gaskets don't like it.

Hey, Mark, get this stuff called Star Tron. I have to buy it at a motorcycle shop. My Corvette mechanic told me about it. Its supposed to counteract the alcohol and save the Carbs! I've been using it in mine with no problems!  Thumbs Up

I guess I've been in the dark about alcohol in the gas. What's up with that???
Are our Corvettes at risk?

Yes, Kevin, it will affect our cars, especially the carburators. Remember, there was no such thing as alcohol in gas back in the day our cars were produced. If you ignoe iy, you WILL have problems in the future!

Hey Barry..did you know Ford designed the Model T to run on ethanol?   I researched this star tron product..walmart carries it..its in the outdoor boating section according to star tron..it sounds like it breaks the water down into molecular and allows it to be burned off..it does not eliminate ethanol..if you have water in the gas or store the car this stuff sounds like it should work..I think the thought is ethanol attracts water therefor it will have water in it no matter what..ok I can see that..just not sure how much water E 10 can absorb?   Really there is no problem running this stuff as it claims to clean everything..and it is not an alchohol..key point there..most people think they should put the dry gas when they get water in the tank..if they have E10 in there you only add more alchohol and increase the amount of alchohol in the fuel..meaning a higher than E10 fuel..something that can be bad..anyway haven't called the gas station lately to see what gas is at now but I would bet it is over 7$ a gallon now!

3.83 Al, wow we just got some yesterday, 3.50 if I pay for it within 5 days. I guess that was a deal. DeadWhere the heck am I going to get that kind of money?Wits End I wanted to chase the guy away when I saw him coming.
4 dollar gas, ethanol may go to 15% & they know it aint worth a dam. Heating oil prices. And we're still buying most of our oil from scum bags that would like to cut our heads off with a handsaw.

Fuel alcohol absorbs waaay more moisture than gasoline does, and the mixture is extremely corrosive to metals/plastics, and rubber products....basically EVERYTHING in the fuel system. The newer cars were designed with this in mind, and the parts are compatible with the ethanol blends that were in the pipeline at the time. OUR Sharks, on the other hand, were NEVER intended to run anything but real gasoline...none of this mamby-pamby ethanol crap.
If there's something that will actually break down the water in the fuel to where it can be burned, that's ok, but...it does nothing to eliminate the problems associated with the alcohol damaging the rest of the fuel system, if I read what Rich posted correctly.
Does this stuff actually break down the moisture in the fuel IN the tank, so it will evaporate, or just make it easier to burn in the combustion chamber? Actually, water won't burn, but it will create steam, which would do some serious cleaning in the cylinders!
I'm curious about this stuff now...

Went to $3.55 here early this week, then began to sink...  $3.40...  $3.35...  $3.31, then yesterday, up with a bullet - back up to $3.65!  Luckily, I was able to find a station still at $3.31 (across the street from $3.65).

I'm sure the Japan earthquake will do nothing to drop the prices, most likely just the opposite.  Why?  Why not - if I ran an oil company, it sounds like a good excuse!

Confused I have a 03' Impala which developed a "O" ring leak on the fuel pressure regulator for the fuel rails. It was difficult to diagnos becouse of the evaparation. I had this HORENDOUS smell in the garage. E-10 STINKS. After I replaced it, smell went away. What is in that stuff? No wonder the old car parts don't like it.  The speed shop I use has the additive for E-10, and I was courious to know if it was all hype or a ligitimate product to assist in preserveing our old cars.  The STAR-TRON product is advertised in the motorcycle mags I get. I may look into something to off set the corrosion factor in all my engines.  I suspect the reason my lawn mowers are running poorly is a result of this E-10 factor. phew   Yeah, Rich it was a long one!Big smile  I am gettin better with this thing!

Geez Mark..never seen a post that long..and no spelling errors! ! That one finger plink is really getting good..I think the one thing that must be understood about E10 and all ethanol gas additives like Star tron is they do not remove the alchohol..they remove water..this product is like stabil..it doesn't remove its corrosive propertys..E10 is certified by manufacturers by govt mandate to be acceptable from 02 and up..all..so I dought the leak you had Mark was a by product of ethanol..I still think the best protection we have is running the fuel lines empty before storage and leave as little gas in the tank as possible..other than that just keep a wide eye on all rubber lines..

Rich

Clap Who said ya can't teach an OLD dog new technology! Before I got this job I didn't even know what one of these things was. Big smile
Sooo... Rich, if we use the additive, and remove WATER, does that intensify the corrosive compounds in the gas and compound the distruction?  We pay big bucks for 92 octane and remove some of the properties with additives, get LESS for our buck and pay for something else. Can we pump 87 octane and use a booster for octane and remove the water as well.Confused  AngryThe bureaucrats will eventually find a way to eliminate all of the real gas burning cars by doing away with fuel, just like they are taking our AMMO cause they can't get our guns. Ouch  Just drive em I guess and fix em when they break.

Check out this web site. You can get ethanol free gas in some states. There's one in New Hampshire about 40 miles from me but it's only 87 octane. A bunch in places like PA and TX.

Mark..these additives only remove water..water rusts stuff..thats part of the corrosive part of E10..the ethanol disolves sludge and old crap in the fuel system so clogged fuel filters can happen ..your better off wizzing in the gas tank than using an octane booster..they don't do much..and cost much..just relax and maybe use some stabil or the others on the market..storage will be the biggest concern ..and Jeff I have seen that site..its ok but at times can be very inacurate..don't drive the 40 miles unless you call first and find out if they are not E 10.

Oh an Heston said it best " from my cold dead hands "..hopefully hit that for a day in Pittsburg this year!

Rich

It is now up to $3.50 for 91 oct here in Tucson, AZ.  The Regular unleaded has gone up a lot but, the good stuff has remained in the same area so far.

Actually, you should keep the tank full during storage. The less air in the tank the better. Changes in temp. causes the humidity in the air to condense into water, the more air the more water you'll get.

Your right about that Dave..it will do that..I just don't store anything with any gas in it..I think it is my Grand dads fault as he taught me to do so with the boat and still do now..pulled the line off at the lake when we were on the trailer waiting to go home to run the carb out of gas..he always said you never know how long it will be untill next time you will get out..always made sure only a little amount of gas was left in the little tank..rather start the day with a fresh tank than an old one..don't want to get stuck out there..so how many sayings did he have..well he was from central Alabama so there were many..the big one now with E10 is that it will eat the junk in the tank and since our cars got many years on them with no E10 then there is bound to be some junk in there..the additives should remove the water..and the less you have in there the less chance you will end up with a full tank if crud in the Spring than not..the change in temp isn't really a big deal unless its stored during the summer or you spend winters in a humid place like the beach area..I do keep a full tank all summer though..it motivates me to try and burn it all off by fall time..seem to do that pretty easy..

Well, after a very long winter of being stored with a full tank of 10% ethanol gas, I took my '79 out twice last week. It seems to run good.
The only trouble I had was that darn nylon gasket at the filter inlet was leaking again.
I reviewed the thread from last August ("Gas Leak?") and have it straightened out. Thanks again, folks! Not sure if the ethanol would cause that particular gasket to break down or not.

We're currently paying $3.79 per gallon for regular unleaded right now. It's still at 10% not 15% yet.

Kevin
