Just reading my trim tag and want to verify something.  "TRIM 752  10L PAINT"

I know it says red claret interior and white exterior.  Does the "L" stand for lacquer?  Being a St.Louis car I had always remembered hearing that they used lacquer and Bowling Green used a base coat/clear coat system.

I think (emphasizing the word think!) that your tag means:

White paint, medium red leather interior.

One decoder site I saw said that the L was for leather interior (which makes sense with your trim code).  Didn't read anything about lacquer vs. clear coat.

The "L" after the paint code is for "Lower". That format started in '73, even tho they were not doing any two-tones at the time. If you have a two-tone car, there would be two paint codes listed, an "L" for lower, and a "U" for upper.Thumbs Up

See, now that's interesting.  At first you would think it's kind of dumb to put the "L" in, but it's not like they were putting it in they just were never taking it out.  Saved some time and man power I would think.

They were using the paint codes across the board....not just Corvette, so the code formats were "standardized". On single color cars the code ended with the "L", regardless of the car line(Corvette, Impalla, etc.). Back in the day, it was theorized that the "L" was for Lacquer paint, but...at the time, ALL they had/used was lacquer, so that theory dint hold water. They dint start using enamel until the Bowling Green plant went operational in '81.
The only(regular production) St. Louis cars with both the "L" & "U" code was the Pacer, and the Silver Anny cars... both in '78, but still lacquer.  Thumbs Up

Also note that 1973 was the production year when General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAD) took over management duties of the Corvette assembly plant from the Chevrolet Motor Division. This transition began in the mid 1960s with other Chevy brands (Chevelle, etc) all of which is in keeping with the GM effort toward standardization.

The evidence of this transition for Corvette is the GMAD buildsheet that is used in 1973 assembly and glued to gas tanks.
