I have taken my 82 to my trusted local mechanic and had the alignment set.  When I drove the car, it wants to pull to the left slightly.  Took the car back to the shop and he adjusted the alignment slightly more.  He drove the car and said it wants to pull to the right now.  He continued to try and adjust slightly and it would pull either right or left each time.  He told me he has check everything he can think of to correct the problem and the only conclusion he can find it that there is something defective in the steering box.  Does this make any sense?  Should I replace with a rebuilt unit?  He stated that the unit on the car now is a rebuilt unit but I do not know how long it has been on the car.

IF changing the alignment is causing it to pull in either direction, the issue has to be with the alignment...not the box.
Was it pulling before?
Is he aligning both ends of the car, or just the front?

Lot of different things can cause a pull to one side or the other...tires, brakes, worn/damaged suspension parts, bent frame, etc. Honestly, I would have to consider finding a Corvette shop, or an alignment shop the understands the Corvette suspension to check it out, and see if the issue is with the alignment or not.

If you want a second opinion on the alignment contact Mecklenburg Fleet Service at 3227 Wilkinson Boulevard Charlotte, NC 28208-5629(704) 392-1253Open Weekdays 7:30am-5:30pm. Ive had work done there after being referred there by Dub at Corvettes Etc. in Charlotte. They are on Wilkinson Blvd just past the Paperdoll Lounge parking lot, not that I've ever been to that disgusting placeWink.  You cant see their building from the road unless you are really looking for it, watch for the sign at the edge of the Paperdoll parking lot.   They did a good job on my alignment a couple years ago (front and back). There is a Chevy dealership that Dub uses as well but I cant remember which one it is.  I cant remember the alignment guys name at Mecklenburg but he has done a lot of vettes. Joel is correct, as always, if your guy is only doing the front your results are not going to be good.

Corvettes Etc. 4927 Wilkinson Blvd Charlotte, NC 28208 Phone: (704) 394-5150 Owners name is Dub

If it has power steering the control valve may need to be centered.

He has aligned both ends of the car.  When I took it back the first time it was pulling left slightly.  He tried to adjust again several times and it either wants to pull left or right slightly, not track straight when you drive it.

How do you center the control valve?

Thanks Chip for the advice.  I may give them a call if I cannot figure something else out.

The control valve centering has a procedure in the GM service manual. When I sold my 82 I let the manual go with it, so I can not help with the how to.

If you feel that the valve isn't centered I can make you a copy of the centering procedure from the 82 manual if you don't have one. Shoot me a PM if you need it and get it to you.

Finally got around to the pulling left issue.  Valve was not centered.  Soon as I disconnected the piston arm and started the car the wheels shot straight left.  Centered the valve and driving straight now.  Thanks for all the help
