Hi everyone.

I have a 75 Coupe and my Trip Odometer works but the reset knob is missing. The shaft for the reset is still sticking out below the dash where it's supposed to be.
I tried turning it with my bare hands and it won't budge. I looked in my owner's manual and it doesn't say whether you need to push or pull or just turn it to reset it. I also did a search on the Internet but didn't have any luck.
I don't want to break it by forcing it.
Does anyone know the correct procedure to reset the Trip Odometer on my 75 Coupe ?
Thanks in advance.
Trent.

Hi Trent,
You will need to push up on the end of the cable and turn it to reset it. If it works and pray that it does you are a very lucky man. You can purchase the rubber cap for the bottom from any of the corvette vendors.  If it doesn't work you are in for one of the most difficult jobs you will attempt on a C3. I just got mine on my 73 working this past Sunday.  Mine was keeping track of miles but I couldn't reset it. I would push up but I could'nt get it to turn. My cable was crushed between the dash braces and it was making a 90 degree straight down turn to the bottom. I had to get it working for NCRS OPS judging this June. There is just no room to get your hands up under the dash while lying flat on your back after removing your seat of course. Before I go any further let me know if yours worked following the procedure I mentioned above. Remember to push up while turning, you'll need to keep turning until all the numbers revert back to zero..
Good luck my friendThumbs Up
Jim

Thanks Jim for the information.
The weather around here has just been to crappy lately to take the Vette out of the Garage and work on the Odometer. Weather man says it might get better tomorrow so I will give it a try and let you know how it comes out.
Thanks again for the help.
Trent.

Jim,

I finally got around to working on the trip reset.

Followed your instruction and thank goodness it worked.

The cap was missing (later found it on the floor under the seat but cracked).

I used a mini set of vice grips and worked it up and down while turning it slightly left and right,

and after a few tries it reset and seems to be normal now.

Thanks again for your help.

Trent.

The trip odometer was working before I got it reset to zero.
Now it doesn't work, it stays on 0.

I must have busted the cable inside or something.

Bad luck.

What I found with my 72 is the cable has to be pulled back down otherwise the plastic gear will strip. I push it up , turn to -000- then pull it back down and I'm good.

To repair it you will have to pull the dash and speedo out.

My odometer was not working at all on my '75, so I completely dissembled the whole thing (not as bad of a job as I thought it would be), and replaced the shaft/gear that drives the odometer.  The odometer then worked, but not the trip odometer (the reset did work).  After taking it out again, I found that the beveled gear that drives the trip odometer was not being pushed back against its mating gear (this is pushed out of the way when you push in the reset knob).  Evidently the spring is too weak to hold it against its mate.
Rather than pursue this further, I gave up, happy that I at least had a working odometer.  I now carry a pen and paper to write down mileage for a trip (or to check the gas mileage).
