Spokane Hot Rod Association: My $26 vette paint job

This was an interesting and amusing read.... too bad no pictures.
And no, I'm not telling you to paint your car with a roller.....Confused

Might be fun to try it on old "beater".  Whats the cheapest you can get a paint job for these days.  Remember the $99 Earl Scheib paint job?

I knew a guy back home that rollered his old Burick 225...looked like crap, but it was at least all one color...ALL of it...bumpers, trim, grill...everything but the glass! Said he didn't care what it looked like at that point...just got tired of looking at the rust!!!
He also mentioned he had a little help painting the car...his good Buddy Weiser, and his partner Jimmy Beam...

When I got my Vette it looked like the precious owner painted over all of the chrome with a brush and black paint.

Yeah I remember EARL SCHEIB I had a 64 Chevy Van painted by them. My dad & I spent several weeks doing the bodywork, drove it up to Indy, gave it a sand down on the bugs, masked off the windows. etc. and came back at the end of the day. (in by 8 out by 5 was there claim). Uncovered the masked areas and wal-ahh new shiney siver metallic paint. It was the best $119.00 I ever spent. ( I splurged, $20 bucks extra for metallic) It was pretty sassy lookin ol flatglass with those 70's wide ovals on the front & the 60's wide ovals on the rear with Indy mags on it.....

Over on CF there is a fellow that Pays It Forward 1 paint job for a C3 every year. You have to buy the paint and do the body work (or pay him to do it) for Christmas. Thats a pretty nice deall too.

Tux, thanks for the link to Earl Scheib.  Not too bad, the paint jobs now run $259 to $399 considering inflation and all.
And Tux, how did the paint job last?
Wonder what the quality is today?

I remember their slogan, "any car, any color". What they didn't tell you was the color had to be one of their colors, not pick a color you like. I had them paint my 1978-LTD II back in 1983.

My second car was dad's old 55 Buick.  I had Earl Scheib paint it for $29.95.  The color was blue.  After they painted it they parked it under a tree that was sapping. That was around 1965. There is a Earl Scheib here in Oceanside Ca., don't know what they charge now.

A friend of mine had a Jeep Cj done at Earl Sheib a couple of years ago and it looked OK for a jeep from 20 feet.  Chris's logic was that the jeep was going to be subject to trail rash anyway and the main point of painting it was just so all the replacement fenders would be the same color for a year or two till it got all beat up again.  I think this is the only time I've ever heard a good reason to go to Earl Sheib or Maaco.

Mama had Earl paint her 'Maro a few years back...got one right around the corner from the house here. She took it in one Friday morn...we picked it up that evening...still well as h@#l!!!
Black enamel! I had to point out to her that they fergot to do the ground effects silver, as it was to start with...she looked confused, then said..."Heeeeey?!?!? wtf???" She went back inside and ripped them a new one. They squirted the silver on right then and there! .....didn't even mask off the other stuff...just ran a 2" piece of tape down them, and shot it!

Took almost two weeks for the dam thing to dry to touch...by then, it had bird crap all over it!

Ahhhh....the memories....

Anyone that paints a Vette with a roller should be shot! Speaking of Earl Sheib, my Dad had his 1960 Ford Falcon Station Wagon painted (blue)there and he got one free repaint after it started to peel. This was in the late sixties early seventies in Sothern California. I guess they didn't really sand or prime it.
