We usually have 5 stops (five card stud?). Each car has a "poker hand sheet". At each stop, the "dealers" note the card pulled on the "car sheet" and on the "dealer's sheet". The "dealer" at each stop also makes sure there are no "duplicate" cards in the car's "hand" to that point. The "car sheets" are then validated at the end of the run against each "dealer's" list to make sure all is "fair and above board". Best poker hand wins - and we usually have a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd - plus worst, just to keep it interesting.

Each car is given directions (clues?) to get to each card stop and then to the final location (usually a nice place to eat). The "dealers" at each card stop are also given directions to their card stop location - and to the end location. Again to ensure fairness.

Hope this helps.

This may sound like a dumb question.  Other than the vague statements I have heard about going from one place to another and collecting cards,   How does a poker run work?  Exactly what is it?

Ken;

It's a rally.......normally you run for time, speed and distance (a TSD rally), a "Poker Rally" is one version of a "gimmick rally", one which you travel over a pre-set course (but unknown to the participants prior to their arrival) Upon arrival, drivers and navigators are given route instructions (2.3 miles to Shell station, turn left, go 1.73 miles, bear right at boulder, etc.) There are 5 checkpoints set up, at which you stop, and are handed a playing card..at the end of the course (usually a restaurant parking lot), the best 5 card stud poker hand wins..........

Roy

So does the poker hand determine the winner, or is it a combination of TSD and the poker hand?

Strange as it seem, I have never been on a rally, but it holds a great interest for me.  Strange as it seems, my brain is working.

Nope, as a "gimmick Rally", TSD doesn't count (the navigator doesn't need the clipboard with the three stopwatches on it..) Best Poker hand wins, period

Rallies can be a lot of fun.....Navigator selection (if you're not married to them) is important.... Ya don't want it to degenerate into a fight over that last right hand turn......

There's a bunch of small trophies usually given, and dash plaques for all

At the least, it's a nice day's ride in the country, with dinner at the end

Thanks to everyone who posted a reply to the poker run. Our club "Chester County Corvette Club" of Lionville, Pa. plans to hold this event event in late September.

Ah ... they can be a blast. At least the Poker Rallyes can be. The Gimmick Rallyes give me fits. In those, all you get at the driver's meeting is a set of "clues" to get you t othe end. In this case "shortest time" is the winner. But, depending on who sets it up, the clues can be a "pain in the a**" - like look in your rearview mirroe to see a road sign on the opposite side of the road. Guess that separates the "great" rallye teams from the merely "good" rallye teams.

If I can fit it in, I'd like go to your PA rallye in September. Maybe IRON82 and I can carvan up there. Keep us posted on the deatils.

Mike,

It's only about 100 miles from my place. Should be an easy run up there. Hopefully, it'll be when I have an opening on my schedule. Should be fun.

The LAST poker run I was on was held my Mason Dixon Corvette club...
which means it drew memberships from both above and below the Mason Dixon Line....

Anyway I got completely lost after I picked up 2 cards...and finally had
to find a phone booth (long before Cell Phones were popular)...and Call
in to GIVE UP and also get directions to the Party that follows ...

Long Story Short... The CALL WAS LONG DISTANCE... man was I lost...

Next week I found out I was only 5 miles away fromt he party...BUT
the call was long Distance because it was across state lines...GHEESE!

Micki,
In Texas, you should have a Texas Hold-em rally.
