Well got my new (old) vett (pix to follow tomorrow) Anywho I need to install the rear window on it so I have a question. What kind of sealant do I use for this? I know I need the gasket thing but I dont have a clue what type of sealant to use. BTW its a 75

More than likely it is a 3M product and you should call the local paint supply houses, most of them probably sell the adhesives as many paint projects require r&r the glass.

It should be caulk tube grade 10 oz. Be careful how much and where you put it on the surface, meaning follow the directions on the tube as the sealant can ooze out onto your interior components and if you ever have to remove something, you might have to cut the sealant loose to get the part out without breaking the part or cutting through the sealant creating a leak. A Local glass guy down here did me that favor, but I got everything out without breaking the part and creating a leak, but it was testy as the interior parts totaled $340.00 if needing replacement.

You also have the vertical window I believe, so your's might be tough. I would ask the supply house and probably also get a quote from the glass guys. It might be better letting the glass guy do it, as I think you will have to shim the glass, caulking it in sections after removing specific shims, and you would be paying for the sealant, probably under $10.00 plus a hour of their time and if it leaks, it is on them!

I just resealed my rear window on my 77, I used this ZET-397 21.95 73-77 REAR WINDOW SEAL KIT from Zip you will notice on the bottom and article on how to do it

That Zip kit is correct, except it doesn't have any sealer...just the rope seal, which is definitely needed. You'll also need a tube(caulking type) of a Urethane sealer. It's similar to silicon, but the urethane won't absorb moisture.
If you just use the rope seal by itself, chances are the winder will leak...maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but it will leak.

The zip kit came with the primer, a cutting cable, 2 rubber blocks to support the window and the seal. Joel if I understand what you are suggesting, is you still need to put the Uretane sealer around the window on the outside to completely seal the windw. I am asking because I just did my rear window with the kit and was wondering if it needed more around the window on the outside.

That's exactly right, Bob.

With just the rope seal, water will puddle in the small space between the glass and the body back there, and it will eventually leak into the rear compartment. With a new seal, and a fresh install, it'll be ok for a while, but once the body starts flexing around while you drive, the seal will start to work loose, and then you get water intrusion. A bead of the urethane sealer around the glass on the outside, to fill the gap, will keep that from happening, and the urethane will last a long time with no problems.

Sounds good I saw what you are talking about around the window, I am clad you mentioned it I was going to use silicon, I will get a tube of urathane to seal it thanks for the info

I checked the AIM, just for grins, and it shows an engineering change dated 8-24-73 that dis-continues the use of the urethane sealer around the rear glass, leaving only the butyl rubber rope seal to stick/seal the glass to the frame, at least for the '74 models. I do know my late build '74 had the sealer on it....may have been put on by the dealer, or the original owner. I still wouldn't install the glass without the sealer...
