Hi, repop small parts are showing up and its time to tear down the interior while its still winter. I'd like to order leather covers in the next month or so and maybe you guys can point me towards some quality products or....maybe tell me what brand has been less than satisfactory? Its a big purchase. As with many products, I'm wondering how many manufactuers there really are....maybe most are reselling the same covers under different names? I see leather covers from the mid 500's on ebay to over 800 from Corvette America. Of course I need 72 blue which seems more difficult to find. Suggestions? Need foam too....if there are non OE improvements out there please throw that in too. This car will be driven...not a points car. Improved comfort will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave

Mid America makes a good product. The annual meet was held there a few years back and we got a first class tour of the facilities. Great company to deal with.
Corvette America is another good one. Willcox Corvette in Indiana has sales on interiors often and I believe the product they sell is Corvette America, but check to be sure.
I'm sure there are other good ones, but these are 2 I know of.

Only comment I can make is to the comfort end. I had my seat redone local in Italian leather. Although very soft, I'm sure my butt wouldn't know the difference in any material if I had not changed the seat cushions. Getting new ones made a huge difference. You might want to look into new covered seats even though it can be much pricier. When I thought about the amount of time and effort that I would have put into recovering the original and then the feeling of the new, I was glad I got new cushions.

Oh yes, new foam for sure. I'm finding that tell tale sign of compacted foam breaking down....yellow dust all over the carpet.

I bought new leather/vinyl covers and foams from Corvette America back around 2002. I did the work myself. (never again-PITA) The seat cushions held up well. I sold the cushions to another vette owner since they were still in great shape in 2012.

In 2012 I had Mid America make me up a custom set of seat cushions Leather/Alcantera (man made suede.) I was please with the workmanship. The Alcantera material cost a bit more, but I wanted something unique.

Bought mine from Corvette America. Cant say how they went together because I farmed that job out. But as for comfort, two thumbs up!

All the above recommendations are good. Mid-America may be the better bet for being able to get a rare color.  All are going to be spendy so look for sales.  There was an outfit that used to offer free installation during the slow winter months - don't know if they still do that.

In the comfort category look outside the box a bit and consider swapping in seats from a C5 or a Fireo.  There are threads in the Interior forum that discuss both.

I purchased my seat covers from Mid-America and foam from Eckler's as well as the wire tool, hog rings and hogs ring pliers.

Why 2 different places? I am bad to comparison shop and it made sense at the time. I would shop around. However I did purchase the seat covers and foam from Al Knoch interiors for my 1999 Vette 5 years ago. Most pleased with those covers as well!

Overall I have been very pleased with my choices as both seats in my 78 have held up extremely well for the last 10 years.

If you have no experience as I didn't in recovering seats, I recommend the Eckler's videos on how to recover the C-3 seats. It is most informative.

Good luck!

My seat covers/foam came from GM. Of course, they came in the car when it was new....LOL Clown

I really would like to recover the seats in both of mine, and this thread is getting some good feedback. The '74 seat covers are still in good condition, but the foam is totally shot. On the '85, the foam is ok, but the covers are torn all to heck....go figure. If/when I do mine, I'll go Al Knoch for the '74, and prolly Mid-Am for the '85.

Your '72 seats shouldn't be as difficult to do as the '78-'82 seats. Those later seats have more pleats it seems to deal with. When I first did mine I figured it would be a piece of cake since I had no problems reupholstering the seats in my '68 Firebird. Boy was I wrong. My advice is just take your time and take a break if you get frustrated. I'll be looking forward to seeing pics of your finished product.

I got mine from Wilcox, the stuff came from Corvette America but Wilcox had better prices than Corvette America. I got the "Leather Like" material, looks like leather but wears like iron. I'm sure any of the vendors noted will be just fine. New foam makes a world of difference in comfort. Good luck with the project.

After pulling the seats from my 74 convertible and looking at all it would take to put them back It was going to cost an arm and a leg because things like the chrome seat back hinges had rusted, the seat back were cracked, foam was shot and worst of all, had I spent the money to "bring them back", I'd still have been faced with a seat that's less than comfortable. I began the search, firstly looking at C5 seats. What I found was they could be made to fit...at a price. C5 seats tend to come at a premium, and even then, I'd still be faced with having to come up with a seat cover for them that matched my Medium Saddle interior. This would drive the cost to well over 1500 bucks, more than I have budgeted for seating duties. I then looked at Fierro seats, but wasn't able to find a worthy example. What I did find, and had been listed on Craigslist for over a month with no hits was a mis-matched set of seats from a C4. One was a gold color and the other was 2 toned black and red. I tossed out an offer of 100 bucks and was on my way home with the ugliest set of Vette seats I had ever seen...but they were all there. I knew I'd be recovering them anyway, so the ugly didn't matter, and these seats are WAY more comfortable than the original C3 seats. I ordered the correct Medium Saddle spray dye, and colored all the hard plastic for a good match. After searching my options in the cover department,  I went with covers from Corvette America for 2 reasons. First, I have a friend with covers from them, and they look great. Matter of fact, I'd have sworn they were leather...but they are not. They are called "leather-like", with the fit and feel of leather yet tend to last longer and are much easier to care for. The second reason is Corvette America stitched them using the correct Medium Saddle, a color not available in C4 seating. I also had to use the seat rails from the C3 seats, and build bracket adapters to fit them to the C4 seats while keeping the seat low as possible.

Once the covers arrived, I went to work. After completing one seat, I stopped dead in my tracks. Here you can see why. The Corvette America seat covers fit like a wet noodle. Certainly unacceptable in my book. The areas around the bolsters looked terrible.

After a few days of deliberation, I broke down and ordered new seat foam, another 250 bucks. After it arrived, the first thing I noticed was the difference in feel between the new seat foam and the original. If I didn't know better, I'd say Corvette America uses some kind of jelly substance in the foam process as these foams are unbelievably comfortable.

After installing the new seat foam and the new covers, they fit like a glove, certainly worthy of their new home.

So I guess the moral of this story is don't skimp. If your car is 30 years old, spring for new seat foam. You wont regret it!

I just bought new covers from Wilcox. They came from Corvette America and look real good. My last set came from Al Knocks about 15 years ago.
My drivers side has some ware with the side trim has a tear in it.
Corvette America has a great video on how to do the job.
