Not sure this post belongs here, but what other section does it belong to then?

This happened to me 12 years ago and I can't remember how I fixed it at the time. Too bad for me: It happened again this week.
The accelerator cable got loose from the gas pedal and guess what, the thing is not easily accessible. Last time was late at night. No light, no luck. This time I had plenty of light, but the shoulder of the highway is definitely not the best place to work on the car.
Still, I managed to fix it temporarily using a small wood stick I found on the ground, and I made it back home. Once in my garage, I made a better fix that should last longer than the wood stick. But still, I'd like to understand how it is supposed to be done. Not much litterature on the subject.

On the pedal end of the cable is a nylon grommet. That grommet becomes brittle with age, and can just break up, and fall off, leaving you with no throttle control.

This grommet fits into a slotted hole in the accelerator pedal, like this...

I have used hose clamps, zip ties, even wrapped tape around the cable end in emergencies to get it going. Once home safe, you can get a new grommet for the cable end, and it will be like new.

Fixing these things on the road is a major pita....btdt...Censored

Thank you for the quick reply.
However, my gas pedal braket doesn't look like that. It is not made of formed sheetmetal with a slot for the cable to slide in. Instead, it is a forged rod, with a hole in the flattened end. I have to pull the cable through the hole (very hard to reach). From what I have found on the floor (a broken pin with a spring in it) I believe the original part that is now missing looks like that: http://www.ecklerscorvette.com/corvette-gas-pedal-pin-1968-1982.html
But I am not sure and I don't know how it really works.

Regardless of the material used, or the way it looks, the concept is the same....cable goes thru the arm, and the grommet forms a seat for the cable. I don't have pics of every single variation out there, so I use what I have. On the set-ups with only a hole in the arm, the grommet has a split in it. You route the cable end thru the holes in the arm, then insert the grommet onto the cable end. Thumbs Up

The part in link you posted isn't related to attaching the cable to the pedal... that's the pin that holds the actual pedal to the linkage. The spring you found fits in there too, and both holds the pedal to the linkage, and keeps the pedal from flopping.

Did your pedal fall off, or did the cable come loose from the arm??

Weird!

No, my pedal didn't fall off. Just the cable disconnected from the top end of the rod.
The pin is still in place as shown on your last drawing.
Indeed, I figured out it would be some kind of split grommet, but I didn't find this part neither at Eckler's, Corvette America or Zip Corvette. I will look again.

Thank you.

Check out your local Autozone, Pepboys, etc., in the "Help" section. They may have the grommet. They are available, but I've never seen one listed at a Corvette parts place. It's the same grommet used on MANY other GM products thru the years, including CHEVELLES. Thumbs Up
