well after going crazy the last couple weeks with the 90, i finally
figured out what was wrong with it. wanted to blow the car up it was
driving me that crazy.
anyway now that the 75 is back, i went back to the 90. installed a new fuel pump as the one in it went bad. still wouldn't start. a friend who does a lot of work on the cars with computers, was giving me things to check for and trying to help figure out what was going on. i was asking him a few questions on the different workings on the fuel injection, as i know basics of it but not the technical side of it. one thing left as i figured it was a no fuel problem as i did have spark previously, was to change the fuel filter which he agreed and told me to make sure i check the pressure on the rails. he said he had a teacher who gave told the class to check basics first before even worrying about the computer as that where the problems usually are.
installed the filter and no luck. checked the pressure it was on the money. now what. did what his teacher said and started over at the basics. checked for spark. none. already did the ignition module but not the coil so off to the store and pick up a coil and another module.
take off the cap and sit on the front porch to install new coil. just for the heck of it i pick up the instruction sheet and it says to make sure to install the seconday ground clip, as without it it will eventually burn out the coil and the cap. i look in my cap and there is no clip like they show.
back to store and pick one up and install. CAR STARTS. a $2.13 part drove me crazy for almost two weeks. car runs rich but still have to install new plugs and check map sensor and vacuum hose to it for leaks.
sorry about the book i wrote.

I find myself in the same situation sometimes,I think its gonna be something I know nothing about, how am I gonna fix this problem, probably gonna cost me an arm and a leg, once I get into it,I find out it's only a $5.00 part ,and takes 5 minutes to resolve.K.I.S.S.

That danged part has licked many a butt! You're referring to the little sheet metal, dog-legged shaped piece that fits under the coil in one corner, and then goes down into the connector for the wiring that goes into the dist? I've seen many of those darn things missing. Some coils come with a small wire that has to be placed on one of the screws, and that is the ground.
The car will normally start/run without it, but...it usually doesn't last too long, as it tends to overheat the coil/module.
Glad ya got em both back up & running!!! It's a good feeling, ain't it?!

unfortunately for me ron it already cost me the arm and the leg and i was working on the second arm
.
as my friend told me his teacher said it is usually something basic. i
know that piece wasn't in there when i got the car and i would surmise
the guy i bought it from had someone work on the car and they left it
out.
to top it all off, throughout all this i had replaced the map sensor and when i got the car running, scanner said it wasn't putting out enough volts causing it to stall out. thought with all the cranking and running screwed up might have blown it. happen to have the old one and put that in and because that is putting out too much voltage it is running rich. went and got another one and it was doing the same with low voltage so i returned it.
went to work today and was going to order one thru another auto parts store. gave all the info on the car and the guy asks for the numbers on the one that was in the car. told me there were three different ones that could be used in the car and he needed the numbers to know which one. bad enough missing parts were driving me nuts now some parts stores are starting to. what i can't understand is why the one parts store doesn't know there are three different ones.

joel, mine also has that ground wire in it. on older gm distributors if i remember right had that ground strap on top so when i didn't see it and saw the wire i figured they changed things around. if i had not picked up the sheet that came in with the coil i would have never even knew that it was supposed to there let alone hiding it under the coil
.
