I think this one is way over priced and s/b priced more like the 2000 you mentioned above.

edit - suggest you pick up the Corvette Black Book to help when checking out these cars.

Yeah...that may be a bit high for a 97, even with the fairly low mileage. But, on the other hand, it is RED!
You could prolly get that one for $18,000-$19,000 if ya haggled with them. Remember, tho, the '97 cars did have some "development" issues, being the first year of a totally new car. Check it out...whaddya got to lose?

Look for a past issue of CORVETTE MAGAZINE that has a market report on the C5s.  The write-up goes through the generation year by year high-lighting pros and cons of each year.

It also has a price guide which I'd assume is a national average so you'd have to figure out how those numbers compare to your region.

Joel nailed the major problems, but let me add a few areas of concern...column lock, although this is more prevelant in manual trannys.....some seats tend to rock back and forth during acceleration and braking....and the differential can leak from the side covers.  Good luck in your search

I've only owned my 98 Vert for 2 years... ZERO PROBLEMS But I now need a tire pressure sensor ..wish I could just turn that feature off but ya can't in the 98-99 cars...later years you can...

The seat rocking problem I believe is present in all c5's...seat moves a hair
under WOT which I usually do not notice but it also moves when you apply the brakes...which is very noticeable...  The fix  is not hard  nor  very time consuming  directions  are posted in the Corvette Forum...

I did miss the column lock one, Biff...thanks for bringing that up.
I checked the factory TSBs and recall notices today for the '97 cars...there were 7 for the column lock issue!

The trans-axle leaks have also been a sore spot for the earlier C5s. The only real cure is replacement of the (diff)side covers.

I also forgot to mention about the tops flying off at high speeds...I've had a couple of friends that lost the targa tops while driving down the road. There is a bulletin on that, too.

The tops were flyin' off the C6's, not the C5's.  Chevy fixed the problem though. Wink

Ooh, Ooh get the RED one!! I just got a red '98 vert and it is great fun. I haven't had it long enough to know what can go wrong, and hopefully, with only 38000 ,miles on the clock, things won't be going wrong for a while. I can vouch for the road rash issue; the dang things are so low you've got to watch the dips, and parking lot bumpers!

Hey Jimmy if you buy that thing don't worry about the column lock. If the car doesn't have 1 on it I have a new 1 for you. I didn't put it on my car. After I did some research I couldn't find that it was necessary for the 01. Good Luck Buddy!
