Topic: Car Going Crazy !?
in Forum: All Vettes Discussion
This afternoon on my way home from work my 1995 vette decided to rebel against me. The Service ASR, ASR OFF and Service ABS lights all came on (turning on my car now the lights are all off). In addition to that while driving the Oil Pressure gauge was very erratic raising and increasing dramatically depending on how much I accellerated. Another thing I noticed this morning and more so in the afternoon when leaving work and just sitting in my driveway at home was when I change from park to drive or reverse the transmission seems to kick really bad shaking the entire vehicle (automatic transmission). I've checked all my fluids and don't have any leaks that I can see (no discharge on the driveway etc). I really have no idea what could be going on at this point, any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You.
I'm with you Ron. I have a hard enough time figuring out the computer in front of me, never mind my car using one as a brain. Gotta hook it up to another computer, then that computer tells you what is wrong with your computer.

ASR is the "traction control" system. ABS is the anti-lock brakes...they are related when it comes to setting codes. There is a possibility that one or more of the wheel speed sensors is not functioning properly, which would turn the lights on, and set a code. "Code" being the operative word here. You really need to scan(or have it scanned) to see what codes the 'puter has stored. This will guide you to the next step in solving the problem.
As far as the trans, if there is a speed related code in ANY of the systems, the trans controller will default to full line pressure, creating harsh shifts/engagements.
Bottom line...the 'puter needs to be scanned to see whut the heck is going on. Could be as simple as a loose/corroded ground wire.

The action taken by the PCM/TCM regarding any fail safe mode will depend on what codes are set in the system at the time of the malfunction. If the trans controller sees anything that may be considered a "slip", it will default to full line pressure to try to correct the slippage. A "slip" could simply be a bad speed sensor, a servo that is not appying at the proper time, or even the incorrect size tires.
Retrieving any codes would be the first step.

Anyway, just as a bit of info on most pre-'96 GM cars/trucks. If your Check engine/ABS/ASR lights come on while you're driving, that is the time to retrieve the codes. Once you turn the key off, the codes will be erased. On the '96 & up vehicles, there will be "history" codes stored, but the '95 & older cars don't have this feature. I'll bet there is a ground wire loose somewhere. Very common on C4s.
