Car promoters offer preview of film to air on TV

CARLISLE - Promoters of the car shows at Carlisle Fairgrounds are holding a big party in town tomorrow night. And you're invited.

Carlisle Events will hold a free premiere showing of "Cars at Carlisle," a 45-minute program about the Carlisle car show phenomenon that will air on national television on The Speed Channel at 9 p.m. March 3. The Speed Channel is a 24-hour cable network devoted to NASCAR.

After the premiere, the promoters will show a 1961 episode from the TV series "Route 66" that was filmed in Carlisle.

Viewers of the episode, entitled "Some of the People, Some of the Time," can look for scenes of Carlisle High School, the Molly Pitcher Hotel, downtown and the square, said Chris Edwards, spokesman for Carlisle Events.

The event begins at 7:15 p.m. in Carlisle Theatre on West High Street. Free popcorn and soda will be provided. The theater seats about 1,100 people.

Also on the schedule are two commercials promoting midstate tourism that will be broadcast nationally during the "Cars at Carlisle" airings on The Speed Channel. One 30-second spot was done for the Hershey-Capital Region Visitors Bureau.

The second commercial promotes tourism in Cumberland County and was paid for by the county office of economic development.

"Cars at Carlisle" features highlights of the 2004 Carlisle Events show season. Most events were held at the fairgrounds. "Cars at Carlisle" is to be aired four times on The Speed Channel this spring, Carlisle Events CEO John Detrick said.

Edwards said making the "Route 66" episode part of the party was Detrick's idea.

"John remembers it as a kid. That's how we got turned onto this," Edwards said.

"Route 66" was a series about two guys, Buzz and Tod, who drive around the country in a Corvette. The Corvette was the car favored by Chip Miller, the Carlisle Events co-founder who died nearly a year ago.

The Carlisle episode starred Keenan Wynn as a man running a beauty contest who made bogus claims about Hollywood connections. The episode features a "bar brawl" in what is now West End Cafe on Ritner Highway, Edwards said. But back then it was West Side Tavern.
