Topic: Gimmick, Gismo, or Real Deal?
in Forum: All Vettes Discussion
I just finished posting my vote for the C3 Extravaganza at Vette Magazine. While there, I scrolled to the bottom of the first page where there are some advertisments.
One is for the "Turbonator." This little gadget promises to increase your hp by up to 35% and your mph by up to 31% all for only 69.95 (30 day money back guarantee). Typically I sucker up for these things and usually regret it later. So, thought I would do something entirely different this time and actually get some opinions first before I dive head long into the empty swimming pool, or worse, burn up my engine.
Interesting question. I too have wondered if they would make a difference. The science involved makes sense but I will be watching the replies to see if anyone has tried one.

Usually that gismo, gimmicky stuff is just what is sounds like....
And notice that you get only 30 days to return it. I don't think that you would be able to actually make a good solid determination in that time frame if it works or not.
Save your money IMHO

I, too, am sceptical. I'm a firm believer in if it sounds too good to be true, it's probably not true. I feel that if it worked that great, to give the benefits they say, you would be hearing about it from everybody. I'm not saying it doesn't work, but.......
This product seems like a variation of the "Tornado Fuel Saver" that has been around for a couple of years.
I don't know of anyone who has tried either one.

This is like the Tornado, which means they are both total crap.
Many systems go to great length to straighten air flow. This device wants to spin it at the intake, before the throttle plate.
Try pouring water down a funnel. If you pour it straight down, it flows fairly quickly. If you pour it down the side and it spins, it goes much slower, not faster. It actually restricts the air flow.
In an engine, this restriction creates the opposite than desired effect, actually starving the engine for air and REDUCING output.
Some not to distant time back one of the news magazines on TV, 20-20 I think, did some test on the tornado. They also found it did nothing or hurt performance and mileage.
True high performance intake systems go to great lengths to straighten air out, not spin it.
These devices do exactly what they are designed to do, take your cash. Don't let them take yours.
