had to bring wife to jefferson hospital in phila today. actually we had went sunday and got a room overnight. good thing we went sunday as the storm caused a lot of havoc. anyway travelling down the highway sitting there is a black 84 with a for sale sign. of course i had to check it out and stopped and looked. great condition as far as i can see and is a 4 speed. called and talked to the guy selling it and might wind up buying it. will know by end of week if i can swing it. turns out the guy has a 63 conv, a 64 coupe, a 86 and a 95. will let you know if it happens.ClapThumbs%20Up

Make sure the trans works properly. That is the "infamous" 4+3 trans...the O/D section is notorious for failing if not serviced properly(IE: Never!)
Drive it, and be sure you can handle the rough ride, especially if it has the Z51 suspension. They don't call it "Kidney Bruiser" for nuttin!
Not trying to scare you off of buying the car...they run well. I drove an 84 for about 3 months in 84...couldn't handle the ride, but it was a Z51...the other(base) suspension is a bit softer, but not much.
It is still a Corvette, so, if ya like it, go for it!!
Good Luck!! We need more members in the "Two or More" club!!!

Check out all of the electrical componets closely. Especially the dash lights, these cars have a history of electrical gremlins. My 84's dashlights would flicker an sometimes go out. But, they always came back on and everything worked. I just knew that someday they wouldn't.

Some people give the Crossfire a bad rap but mine never gave me any grief. Mine rode bad until I put new Delco shocks and BF Goodrich tires on it and then it rode like it was new again.

Good luck.... maybe you will be a Black Sheep too in days to come....

has 118,000 miles on it but it appears to be in great condition and the guy sounds very negotiable and plus he seems to make sure everything is kept up. joel, this is an manual 4 speed and don't know if it is the same as the one you are thinking of but will check it out. as far as dash goes he told me it all works but again will find out for sure. hey tux, can't i be a black sheep now, my 03 escalade is black. thanks for all the support and suggestions.

David,
I had an 84 back in 85. It had the 4-speed that the guys are talking about. It went to the dealership twice for clutch problems before it had 40K miles on it. They changed everything eventually: pressure plate, disk, bellhousing, clutch arm, and throwout bearing. Apparently there was a tolerence "stack" that prohibited the pressure plate from making a clean break. Anyway after GM figured it out I never had anymore problems with the drivetrain. It did have a few electrical quirks like windows and mirrors. But overall I really enjoyed the car. I eventually sold it and bought a 1985 that was a dealer demo. I drove that one until it was wore out, then went back to C3 LAND.

How many previous owners?
Do you know if the cam was ever replaced?
That was the first year of big changes. Remember it is really a L A T E 1983.
1984 is very low on the resale list.
Even with everything working and in good shape, high milage makes it worth around $5K.
How is the paint? Interior? Underside? Engine?
Look carefully.

Scott, I'll bet the issue you had was finally traced to bad design of the slave cylinders. Only took them about 4 years to figure that one out!
All early C4 standards were the Nash 4+3. You will see an "O/D Cancel" button either on the shifter handle, or on the console. They did move it in '85 to the shifter, so it depends on the build date.
Listen for any unjujual noises, and verify that it will in fact shift into O/D in second gear, at light/medium throttle.
Again, not trying to scare ya, just pointing out a few little nit-pick issues with the '84. Adams' Apple2007-04-17 10:26:36

glad everyone is pointing things out to check. really not scaring me off but i always like to do the "homework" so i know what i could be getting myself into.  i would imagine by now the problems stated with the clutch would have been corrected as i would imagine it has been replaced. the paint is in great shape as the interior. don't know of any changes to the cam. talked briefly to the guy and i will be going  to check her out  (test drive, etc) maybe this weekend. the seats did not appear to be ripped and everything else on the interior looked fantastic but that was looking through the window. he said everything inside it is in working condition. from talking with him he has given me a good vibe that i could trust what he says as he knows the costs of restoring them as he has five of them. he has 6k or b/o marked and i told him that his price was high (could only check price going back to 87). he said that he will negoiate and will hopefully make a deal both of us could be happy with. my thought  was exactly what dwight said and offer him 5k but that would be depending on the up close and personnal inspection.

5-6k would be about right for that kind of mileage. If the car is in excellent shape other than the mileage, it is well worth that.
Good Luck!! I hope it works out for ya!!
