Anyone ever have a starter that keeps turning over with the switch off and key out?  Suppose it's the starter, or could it be the switch? It doesn't
start in the off position, just continually turns the starter. With the engine cranked in the run position the starter is still engaged.  ????Ouch

Sounds like either a solenoid issue or it is shimed too tight? Does it sound like it is binding when you try and start and are you sure the starter is actually turning or is it just stuck in the flywheel? My .02

Scott, it must be turning if it does it with the engine not running, right?

It's a wierd thing to me. Never had one do this. The only way I can stop it, is by disconnecting the battery.

the same thing has happened to a friend of mines '75.
the car will start and run at idle for awhile then it will load up and stall out.
then when you try to restart it, it does that.  but you have to get to thge battery pretty quick 'cause it melts the negative wire off the alternator and melts the terminal off the battery Confused Wits%20End.

we've been trying to figure this out for months.
at least you know you're not alone....

Three things:
The starter bendix is binding, keeping it engage and therefore the solenoid engaged. This can be due to the starter being too tight up against the block, the flywheel bent, or the spring in the solenoid is broken/weak.

The solenoid itself is damaged.

The purple "Start" wire on the solenoid is touching the red 12v supply wire from the battery(or the wire may be melted somewhere in the vicinity).

Since it doesn't do it constantly, as in every time you connect the battery cable, I'd think the starter is too tight, or there is some other reason that the bendix is not releasing. Try loosening the two starter bolts a little, and see if it disengages then.

It's amazing how quick one can get to the battery on a c4! Finding the correct size wrench to disconnect the cable however is a different story. LOL
I think I should have bought a second c3, and passed on this '93 black rose. I just tried to reconnect the battery cable again with the key off. Betcha can't guess what happened.  Big%20smile  Yep, that ol starter just whined
and whined.

Thanks Joel, I'll get it on stands and pull the starter. I'd much rather do that than pull the ignition switch.
BTW you guys are quicker than fast food!  Clap

And just as indigestible!!!

Is this a problem that just started, or has there been other work done recently?
