I agree with you in that red is overdone, but on your car with the red interior and engine accents it would look good.
 
Going with the white (and red lettering) does grab the eye though.  As long as you can keep up with the brake dust and the color doesn't morph with the heat I'd go with it.  Certainly a conversation starter.
