I know a guy that has a 2001 with 168,000 on his C5 and it's still runnin' strong! You can't beat a good 350 engine. It's an excellent workhorse and will go for many miles so long as it has proper maintenance. I would check the maintenance record and I wouldn't worry too much about the rear bumper thing. If you have seen a rear pumper off on a C5, all that's underneath is built pretty sturdy. It's no big deal for just the back bumper to be replaced. Frame damage is another story........then I would run from it. If it's the right price and drives well and all the maintenance records check out, it should be ok.

C5 prices are continuing to drop. I would keep searching or find me a low mileage early C5.
Yesterday we looked at the car and drove it. Here's what we found:
- It only has the transparent (I know that's not the right word...what do you call them?) top. Owner says it used to have both (he has the original window sticker) but the white one was gone before he bought the car (who would keep a top for a car they don't have anymore....maybe damaged?)
- The existing top appears to be shedding what coating was on it. It's flaking off and looks pretty gnarly. He says a new one costs about $1,100..haven't checked myself yet. Is there anything you can do to fix it...buff it out...recoat????
- It smells like a dog. He's been hauling his dog in it. Made no attempt to hide that (still dogs hair in the back but not alot). Can you get the smell out with thorough cleaning including shampooing the carpet?
- The tire sensor on the left front tire doesn't work.
- Mike thinks the panels don't line up/gaps are too big. Is this a sign of damage or do they just loosen up with mileage?
- Scuff on the right rear bumper where he hit a high curb (not real visible).
So, given all of this should I take it in for a thorough inspection or should I still wait? Price is lower than I've seen a C5.... $12,500
I've been looking at c5's for awhile, you definitely can do better, prices are coming down, and there are loads of them for sale. I found a silver conv 1998 with 65,000 miles for $13,500.00 in stamford, conn. in pretty good condition not mint, and a white 1998 coupe also with 66,000 miles in mint condition for $16,000.00 in upstate N.Y. keep looking. Check ebay and craigslist

The top is probably a glass top (I have one on mine). They are more expensive. The top was probably tinted and the tinting is coming off. This can be taken off and retinted. The tinting helps the inside stay cooler. As far as the tire sensor, something may have come loose and needs to be reconnected. I hate those sensor things, I know when my tire is low....I don't need to have the car tell me.

Another thing about the C5's..........they scrape on anything all the time. You have to be real careful, which is nearly impossible. If you drive it, your gonna scrape something sooner or later. A C3 sits higher than the C5.
Karen, do you have something against dogs?
I let my dog ride shotgun with me in my C5, but she's in my purse (a Chihuahua), but I don't think my car smells like a dog. You can air it out by leaving the windows down for awhile and you can use that Febreeze (sp?) stuff and spray in there.

Did you like the way it drove/handled?
Which panels are you talking about?

Nothin against dogs! Got one myself. The doggy smell in this car isn't nearly as bad as the perfumey smell in the first C5 we drove. That guys was trying to hide something. Mike & I kept smelling it all day!!!

I did love the way it drove/handled. Felt more like a luxury car than a sports car!
I'm not sure about the panels...I'll ask Mike for clarification. He's the one that was concerned. He wants me to wait until we get the final yard bill for the boat (which by the way is FINALLY in the paint booth!!!) I dont know.....

Most common is the ECM (engine control module) and the BCM (body control module). If there are no current code issues depicted it is a crap shoot to say something will go wrong. The modules are not super expensive. It is the diagnostics and labor charges that occur while trying to pinpoint the exact root cause.
If it were me I would still continue to hunt for and older low mileage C5. Although the price this car is being offered up to you makes it pretty enticing.....
