This is sort of a stupid question but at least some of you will get a good laugh thanks to me:  In trying to figure out how many days I am going to be needing to take off what is the average miles a person should or could drive reasonable and safely in a day, I have not driven a long distant for quite a while, so far I am looking at about 875 per day. what do you all think? thanks and response when you quit laughing

Larry,
I will assume you will be on the Interstate and that you will be averaging 85 mph.
Get up at 8:00 a.m. and be on the road by 10:00 a.m.
Stop for lunch at noon and back on the road by 2:00 p.m.
Stop for dinner at 5:00 p.m., then drive for another hour before looking for a place to sleep.
That would mean six hours of driving x 85 = 510 miles per day.
Looks like you will need to increase your speed.LOL

Seriously, on my way back from Oregon I averaged 60 miles per hour and I drove from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.. One day I went a little longer and did 1000 miles, but that was a long day. I know Norsky and Wally did some 1000 mile days going out to OR.

I would plan on 700 to 800 miles per day, depending on traffic (slower around big cities) and if you are bringing DeeDee, figure on the lower number for more pit stops.

Good luck and will be happy to see you in May.

I will be driving straight through, about 13 hours (with a few pit stops for gas, food and bathroom).  About 775 miles for me.  I have done 13 hour drives numerous times.  I'd have to say for me, that is my max.  I do wind up drinking a bunch of caffeine during the trip.  I also recommend lots of loud, up beat music and a cracked window to keep you awake when you're feeling droopy.

That will help on the milage as well as the expenses.Thumbs Up

12 hours of driving is OK for one or two days, but I liked stopping at about 4 p.m. and getting a motel (or campsite) with a pool and just vegging to unwind.

Figure that the return trip will be quicker because you will want to get home. I planned on taking 5 days to drive 3000 mile and I only took 4.

The key is to get an early start, say 6:00 a.m. Drive for a couple of hours then get a quick breakfast and gas. I usually had to stop every two hours to pee. That's the problem with coffee.Shocked

Well Hello Larry Beer
I have talked to John a couple of times about driving over, still not sure if I can or not. Would love to go though, if not and you are traveling solo you should be taking Captain C3 with you for a little company (fairly chatty on rough roads):):):) I could be encouraged to drive him down, have a pint, visit etc. Talk to you later, Happy New Year to you and DeeDee. Smile
Eric...

Larry, we thought we'd give you some of our experiences from our trip out to Bend last July. We traveled 2,231 miles from our house to Bend (the estimate from MapQuest was 30+hours). Eliminating our side trips it was a comfortable 3 day trip without pushing it. On MapQuest it says that from Bend to Effingham (I know you don't live in Bend!) is 2032 miles and 30 hours and 40 min. We always figure 2 hours for every 100 miles and since we are 230 miles east of Effingham (it's almost 4 hours from our home) then you could probably deduct the some of the 30+hours it took us to get to Bend. Another idea is to ask Dick Countryman (vettecountry) because his daughter lives within an hour of Bend and he has driven it several times. On the trip out to Bend, we averaged about 650-700 miles per day. This did include our trip to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. When we left Yellowstone we drove 10 hours to meet Dick & Jill in Nampa,Idaho (we got there at 10pm-long day!), but mostly, we drove about a 9 hour day and that's with time to get out and stretch our legs and get a bite to eat. We tried to not drive over 4 hours at a time because of the need to move our legs and get hydrated. Actually, we'd both do the trip again, it was beautiful. Larry, this is really a big personal preference whether to drive straight thru or take a little side trip or two. After the Gathering you might want to consider going straight South on I-65 from Effingham to the NCM in Bowling Green. You never know when you'll get this close again! It's like with everything else in life-personal likes and dislikes. Hope this helps you some and if you need anything else, feel free to e-mail.  Butch
