If you have one and it was issued in the last 15 years, here is how to renew it.

If you live near the border and have an enhanced drivers license, they will let you into Canada.
But you need a clean record. No DUI or DWI in the last 10 years.
It is also advisable to get a Canada insurance card from your insurance company. No cost.

That should get you INTO Canada but don't you NEED a Passport to come back into the U.S.?

From what I read there is less documentation needed to get into Canada than back into the US. Also check with your car insurance company to make sure you're covered driving north of the border and get a revised proof of insurance card if possible.

Items You Cannot Bring Into Canada
Below is a general list of items you are prohibited from bringing into Canada:
- Fresh fruit
- Firewood. Campers should buy firewood on site, burn firewood on site, and leave all unused firewood on site.
- Most types weapons such as tasers, brass knuckles, and pepper spray.
- Certain knives, even those used for hunting or fishing.
- Radar detectors
- Obscene material, hate propaganda and child pornography. They can inspect your laptops, cellphones and other computer equipment to see what you have on them.
- All camping gear, recreational equipment and supplies must be clean and free of pests and soil.

Guys Guys Guys crossing you make crossing the border sound like a horror movie. Trust me it is not that difficult, everyone should have a passport nowadays no matter what you are doing. It has been the same for Sara and I crossing both ways, they ask the same questions and ask for same paperwork, your passport. It has never been a problem either way, as for insurance yes always check to see how you are covered, I have a benefit package which covers me for medical, liability etc which is nice to have. Oh and by the way Radar Detectors are legal in saskatchewan, but not in manitoba. I travel with mine all the time.
I travel to Canada every year for fishing. Always the same questions as long as you have a passport. Where are coming from? Where are you going? How long are you going to stay? Do you have any weapons/alcohol? Getting back into the states is a different story. Definitely need a passport and you’ll need to know your license plate numbers etc. even wanted license plate number of my boat trailer. Other questions are st the discretion of the border agent and what mood he is in that day and how shifty you look 😁 But overall going either way should not be that big of a deal.

I have never spent more than 3 or 4 minutes at border crossing going either way nor have I ever had to give my license plate number although I know it anyway. I have come to the conclusion that you guys must have suspicious look to you
Curious - my brother-in-laws go into Canada every fall duck and goose hunting with their guns. I've never heard them mention an issue crossing the border.
